DIY oil catch can for a 1990 - 1993 Honda Accord. This process can be used for many other applications as well.
After checking countless forums and many sites on catch cans, ive figured out this is the most easy way and most cost effective! Catch cans cost anywhere from $80-$300 depending on where you get it.
Ive put this one together for about $50 CAD. You can get it for less if you have some air/fuel hose around. This Process takes only 15 minutes!
(v` Why install a oil catch can?
Your car allows unburnt fuel/oil to pass trough your valve back into the intake manifold to go back into the engine to burn off. This reduces emmissions and helps our ozone. Unfortunatly this causes a problem for us because that same dirty fuel/oil mix goes back into out throttle body and messes it up causing crud to build up in the throttle body and manifold. Having a dirty oil/fuel mix going back into the engine also hinders performance. This is also a must for any high fuel to air ratio cars and turbocharged cars as well as there tends to be more burn off.
(v` Parts
1 Huskey or equlivent air compresser filter with 3/8" NPT tips ( Homedepot 29.99 each )
2 2" hose clamps ( make sure you buy the screw in type, ( Homedepot $.59 each )
2 3/8" NPT to hose fitting ( Homedepot $2.99 each )
1 3/8" fuel hose or air hose ( Canadian Tire $7.99 for 2ft)

(v` Heres what you do!
This is photo of the Air Compresser Filter at Canadian Tire. This model looks really good but i decided to go get the Huskey one from Home Depot, it looks more solid and the construction looks much better.
These are the 3/8" NPT fittings, if you prefer, Canadian Tire has these in silver for a buck more.
These are the Clamps, i found one kicking around, MAKE SURE YOU GET THE RIGHT SIZE! Too small and it will cut the hose, too large and you will have alot of ugly clamp left over.
Heres a pack of the hose, this is the perfect size.
This is the top of the filter housing with the filter removed, there is a cap attached that looks like a gear. DO NOT REMOVE THIS ON HUSKEY FILTERS IT CREATES A GAP THAT DOES NOT LET OIL DRAIN ONTO FILTER! If you get the Campbell unit at Canadian tire you can remove this to create a more even flow ( it has a ledge so it will not soak the filter with oil).
This is the filter, pretty huh? it can also be replaced if needed, i love the look of this filter and quality seems much better that Campbell. (The Campbell unit has a thicker filter, but if the filter gets clogged, it can also cause your manifold to suck the oil back into engine, and we dont want that, do we?)
In this photo you see the Filter with the 3/8" NPT fittings already installed ( bronze ). Use silicon or some other sealer to put on the threds before installing. The housing is made of a removable holder that also has a valve that can be used to drain the oil. ( I prefer to unscrew the whole clear housing and draing it out )
Here is a close up, you can see that the 3/8" pieces do no screw in all the way, thats ok because its making full contact to the housing.
This is the old hose that we will be replacing.
Spray a good amount of this stuff on the hose fitting ans hose ends before connecting, it makes life a hella lot easier!
Test Fit, I tried to keep the filter away from the engine, but I decided to change that. If you decide to do this differently than I did, dont connect the filter to the tubes before final install, it is seriously a pain in the you know what to remove it!
Final test fit before tighting clamps.
Final fittiment, tighten clamps, DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN. Make sure the valve is pointing up! Theres a little arrow, that means the drain valve is closed.
Double check everything is ok, remove all tools and crap from around the engine and start her up.
Ive had this on my 1991 accord for about a month and have about a 1cm of oil in there! Id rather it there then in my throttle body!
Hope you found this DIY informative, try it yourself, its not hard and it works. Please sign my guestbook! Thanks!
