Our 71 Skylark was originally aquired by my wife for a case of beer from a tow truck driver as it was headed to the crusher. She has a 70 Skylark convertible and thought it would be a good parts car. It had been condemned by the local authorities for not passing inspection, but it had a new dual exhaust system, and the parts needed to pass inspection were minor, brake hoses, wheel cylinders, ball joints, idler arm, I guess the previous owner just gave up. When I met my wife it had been collecting dust in the garage for a few years. I dragged it out and patched some rust in the quarters, installed some '96 300zx buckets, carpet, stereo, some wheels I had laying around, and shot the base/clear silver paint with blue pearl graphics myself, including designing the one of a kind 'factory look' stripes and pinstriping.
It has a stock Buick 350/turbo 350 combo which runs very well. It has a floorshifter of unknown origin and has made a few passes at our local 400 ft dragstrip running 7.39 at 57 mph, equating to a low 15 sec. 1/4 mile. Not bad for bone stock engine and gears, one legger rear, through the mufflers and old radials.
Total investment to date including the initial case of beer is under 600 bucks. The biggest single item was 200 bucks for a new windshield when a cooler fell on it in the garage, doh! Its a cool looking, sweet running headturner that's a blast to drive and easy on the wallet, if only all our cars were like that....
