1981 Mazda RX-7 GS
The Multicolored Red Car
My brother bought this car in 1983 or so and drove it until 1988. At that time he was building his house and this car developed an exhaust leak. He didn't have time to fix it so he parked it. Then the tires went flat. It finally sat to the point where it wouldn't run. After occupying space in his garage for about 15 years, he decided to get rid of it. So soon enough, we load the car up on a tow dolly and make the short trip to my house.
I messed with it when I brought it home. I put some ATF in the motor, ran a hose from the fuel pump to a fuel jug, and cranked it up. The thing ran but now well. The car wound up sitting at my house for about a year as I rounded up the necessary parts.
After sitting all those years, the fuel system was shot. I rebuilt the carb and replaced the fuel tank. I also installed a GSL rear end and replaced the front struts. The radiator was also cleaned. A new starter and battery cables were also installed.
I also removed the front spoiler and installed a front bumper and lower valence. I also installed a connecting pipe and a PrimaFlow muffler.
On 1/24/04 I added fuel to the fuel tank and primed the carb. After a bit of coaxing, the car started and ran beautifully. I managed to put about 10 miles on the car with no problems. The car currently has right at 98k miles on it. Everything seems okay. I'll put some more miles on it before I spend any money on some cosmetics that it needs (seats recovered and minor body work and paint).
02/09/04: The car has been running good but horribly slow. Turns out the secondaries were not coming on due to a misinstalled gasket between the carb and throttle body. After the fix the 0-60 times was about 10.2 seconds which isn't too far from the published time of 9.7 seconds. My 13 year old son replaced the brake master cylinder with a new unit. He and I also installed a RB streetable header that I purchased off of ebay. 0-60 is now about 8.0 seconds.
04/14/04: The car has rolled over 100K so that means 2000 miles since it was revived. I installed a used set of Tokico HP's on the front. I haven't driven it since - and that was about a month ago.
12/23/04: I found some decent GSL-SE seats in a junkyard earlier this year. I also installed used Tokico HP shocks in the rear. I drive this car regularly now - and always when it rains. I've autocrossed it once and rallycrossed it once. The tires and waffle wheels came with a transmission I bought for one of the other RX-7's.
03/25/06: Over the past year or so, not a whole lot has gone on with this car until recently. The car got a new water pump and a coil over spring conversion on the front and adjustable sleeves in the rear. The coil over sleeves and springs (325#) are for a Miata that I found on ebay. The rear springs (170#) and sleeves are from ISC. The car is adjustable up and down now at all four corners. I also took the good tires from the waffle wheels and mounted them on some stripped and repainted " " wheels. The waffle wheels got a set of Kumho R700 rally tires. Now when I do this I have traction and don't hit the bump stops as often:
