STATUS: OPERATIONAL

 

MISSION SYNOPSIS - Land Speed Glory

The plan was simple.  Take the Camaro which had been sitting next to our house for the last two decades, do a quick motorswap with our drag race El Camino, tow to Bonneville and then hold down the gas pedal until the car either broke the 150 mile per hour record or the engine blows.

Simple, right?

 

DAYS UNTIL BONNEVILLE :  144 - Find the El Camino

Our drag race winning El Camino had been stuffed into a barn somewhere.  Unbeknownst to the owner of the barn, the motor inside the El Camino was an absolute runner.  With some determination, a tow strap, and a rusty winch (with no handle) we finally got the abandoned racer onto the Krider Racing trailer.

 

DAYS UNTIL BONNEVILLE: 143 - Suspension

Belltech Muscle Cars / ST Suspension Techniques provided the perfect suspension system for the Camaro.  After ten hours under the car, fighting leaf springs, killing spiders and letting crap fall in our eyes we had the suspension in the car.  Another t-shirt and a pair of shorts ruined. 

      

 

DAYS UNTIL BONNEVILLE: 136 - Motor Swap

Then we headed to Third Street Auto Repair where Pete Peralta gave us the keys to the kingdom.  We had one weekend to use the shop to pull the motor out of the Camaro, put it into the barn-find-El Camino (get it running) and then strip down the drag race motor to go to T.E.M. Machine Shop.  Jay Gelardi and Jeremy Berg worked their fingers to the bone and we got the two motors out and swapped in record time.  The only casualty was Third Street Auto Repair which had never been so dirty in its entire existance.  Sorry Pete!

     

 

DAYS UNTIL BONNEVILLE: 129 - Motor and Transmission

Next we had to get the torn down motor to T.E.M. Machine Shop and the tranny to Napa Valley Transmission.  Rich at T.E.M. said he could take the parts we gave him and build a 500 horsepower beast.  Marty at Napa Valley Transmission said he would build a transmission that could withstand the new engine.  Believe it or not the sum of the parts in the back of this truck will equal the magical 150 miles per hour by September.

    

 

DAYS UNTIL BONNEVILLE: 68 - Paint

Miracle Auto Body and Repair took the Camaro to give it a bad ass flat black paint job to contrast with the white salt flats.  Miracle took one look at the rust around the windows on the Camaro and said that at 150 miles an hour the rear window would blow out and and then the roof come off.  They got to work to rid the rusty cancer and slap some paint the Land Speed Camaro.

 

DAYS UNTIL BONNEVILLE: 63 - Talk to the Newspaper

DAYS UNTIL BONNEVILLE: Dwindiling - We're not there yet. 

The car still needs to go to B&G Tires (wheels, tires, brakes, alignment), Napa Valley Muffler (exhaust, safety equipment from I/O Port Racing Supplies) and Performance In-Frame Tuning (Dyno Tune), and get some HP 234 metal enhancer in the engine.  Much more to come.  Will we make it?  Only time and aerodynamics will tell.
