when i was younger i spent my lazy summer days cruising the back roads near my rural northeastern wisconsin town with my grandfather in his 350, 1974 el camino.  he was a tractor salesman for some 30 odd years, so he knew everyone that lived within 50 miles of our farming community.  my grandfather once told me that he never added anything to his cars that wouldnt add gas mileage, but when he floored the elky i could tell by the satisfaction i saw on his face that in his younger days he was a speed demon. when my grandfather passed the el camino was willed to me. the only work that had been done on this el camino since 1974 was oil and air filter changes.  it was bone stock, exactly how it was sold some 30 years earlier. i didnt know too much about working on cars, but i was eager to learn. it had a lower end knock when i got my hands on it, thanks to my brother, so when i pulled the engine (by which i mean i watched and learned while trying to help my good friend zack) i opted to go right ahead and get it bored to a 383 stroker.  once we got the block back we added an eagle crankshaft, compcam camshaft, compcam roller rocker arms and pushrods, trickflow 92 degrees heads, edelbrock performer RPM air-gap intake, 650 cfm holley carb, 2200 stall converter, ceramic headers finished with side pipes.  thats what i can remember off the top of my head.  there is much work that still needs to be done, and i plan on doing it.  the only things that arent stock that you can see from the outside are crager wheels and the side pipes.  other than that it looks completely stock.  i can only hope that my grandfather would be proud of what i have done, and what i will be doing with the elky.  i did get my grandmother to ride in it, one feat he was never able to accomplish.
