Custom Exhaust Tips:
DeLoreans had two different style exhaust systems throughout the production run from '81 to '83. The early style exhaust (like my car) had bare tubes exiting from each side of the single muffler. These look pretty wimpy and leave much to be desired.
To address the issue, later cars came with chrome tips welded over the standard tubing to enhance the appearance and increase the size slightly. The previous owner of my car tried to replicate this effect with some aftermarket chrome tips:
While these definitely look better than stock, they were too long for my taste and needed some adjustment. Something about chrome and brushed stainless next to eachother didn't look quite right either.
I removed the tips and used the cut edge to determine how much to shorten them. The end result I was looking for was to have the top of the chrome tip to be flush with the flat face of the bumper. This was the length originally intended with the stock setup, but the chrome tips could not be pushed in far enough.
Some test fitting with the shortened pipe allowed the crome tip to be slid on further without exposing the raw tube beneath it.
The other side was cut the same way and both tips were brushed down with a scotch brite pad for a nice even finish that matches the stainless on the car. The end result:
