1988 Subaru GL Wagon
It doesn't look like much but it is a truely amazing vehicle. It is a five speed manual and has hi and low range four wheel drive. The thing will go just about anywhwere. I know it sounds ridiculous but I have found that in 9 cases out of 10 it does better off road then the Samurai I had did. It's awesome in the snow and mud and has very controllable handling characteristics unlike the squirrly short wheelbase Samurai. Ground clearance is a bit on the slim side for big rocks and other sharp obstacles but in low range I have gotten it to slither through some ridiculous spots. I have never been out done by anything but snowmobiles in the mountains and with a bunch of weight and four studded tires I easily got as far in the deep drifts as a full size Dodge pickup wearing four chains. It has never let me down, from the mountain backroads to the fully loaded ski trips. It is still going strong at 200,000 miles. I bought it for $400 with 190,000 miles and it has definitely been one of my best vehicular invesments.
I haven't really done much to it other than a bit of cosmetic work and mounting the two driving flood lights in the grille which are really nice on the little dirt mountain roads at night.
