This is my '72 Super Beetle. My dad bought it for me on October 11th, 2003 for $600 at an auction about 5 miles from our house in Northeast Ohio. I was just starting high school at the time. I had always wanted a beetle, just because of how unique they were, and my dad just happened to see one as he was passing the auction and he knew he couldn't pass it up. It turned into a father-son project. He came home and surprised me with it. He brought it home on a flatbed because it'd been sitting so long that the brakes had locked up, and it was therefore undriveable, although the stock 1600 DP engine sounded pretty good for being 30 years old. I have to admit, I didn't have much faith in it in the beginning. The car had been wrecked, with some pretty bad damage at the front passenger corner, and it'd been driven in the winter on salted ohio roads, so we knew we had quite a bit of work ahead of us....little did we know that it'd take 6 years to complete. It probably wouldn't have taken us so long, but most of the time we only worked on it every other weekend, but near the end we were working on it just about every weekend, and of course there's always the unexpected problem that popped up just as we thought we were done. My grandpa had it painted for me for $1500 as a gift. I had it painted a two tone paint scheme using Subaru blue pearl and white. Once we got it back from the paint shop, we added the finishing touches and thought that we were done, so we took it for it's first real drive up the road since we started on it (we completely replaced the brake system long before). We got about a quarter of a mile and the engine started knocking, so we coasted back home (luckily we were on a hill). My uncle offered to rebuild it, and discovered that a small piece of metal had somehow found it's way into the cylinder. So we bought a rebuild kit and he rebuilt the engine for me. New pistons and cylinders, valves, the heads were cleaned up, and all the seals were replaced. After was all said and done, we had invested around $5000 up to this point. I finally got to start driving it to college on Feb 21st, 2009. It seems to be holding up well so far. It's my daily driver, and I put about 200 mi/week on it. Right now my goal is to purchase the last of the finishing touches for the interior and fix the shimmy in the steering, then lower the front 2-3". My ultimate goal here is to turn it into a germanlooker. I've got so many ideas for the car, and they don't end there. Keep checking back here to see what i've been doing to it lately.

UPDATE: I've got many small projects in progress at this point. Right now I'm designing amp racks for the trunk for my 1300 watt stereo. I'll post specs once everything has been decided and purchased. I'm also working on installing a new set of Autometer gauges and panels, and waiting for Carbon Joe to complete a set of carbon fiber running boards for me. After all of that, I'll be moving on to the suspension to install a lowering kit and wider tires. Check back here to see updated pictures as I get them
