My Miata was built in 1995. I bought it in February 2002 in very good condition, from its first owner which had all maintenance records, the car only had 36.000 miles and it was in excellent shape. One year later I installed a custom turbo kit, which has been continously updated and upgraded as you will see.
What makes the Miata a good project car:
-Relatively cheap
-Boost-Friendly engine (stock internals can hold 14psi / 220whp without much hassle)
-Low Weight (mine was 2220lbs on the scale)
-Rear wheel drive with Torsen limited slip differential
-Good suspension design (double wishbone on 4 corners)
-Good brakes
-Big aftermarket support and user knowledgebase
-Very reliable

When I got it, it had the original (crapy) tires. This two things completely transform the car?s behaviour: Good tires, Good aligment (look for Lanny or IceHawk specs).

Fulda Azurro 195/45/14 tires. They were a GREAT upgrade. Wheel+Tire combo weighs only 24lbs!

After that, as the car is used mostly for track days and Autocross I decided to go with better rubber. I got Pirelli Pzero C ("competizione") semi-slick tires, 205/50/15. This tires have simply amazing on the dry.

The stock car, with timing advanced to 14? and no other mods managed a 16.2@84 mph pass at the drag strip. Yes, of course the Miata wasn?t designed to be a drag racer! but the chassis and suspension can easily cope with double the stock engine horsepower. And stock power gets boring very soon.
