This 1969 Plymouth Barracuda has been in our family since it was new in late 1968 when it was purchased by my grandfather. My brother and I began the extensive resto-mod on this car approx 2 1/2 years ago when we were given the green light by our father who was handed down this car back in 1992. My brother Doug Sloan actually owns the car. I just helped build the car including the engine.
We started by stripping the entire car down to the bare naked Unibody, sent it out to get the body acid dipped to get rid of all the undercoating, paint, sealants, etc.. and to see what the bare steel body looked like under its origional green paint job. It was VERY straight and rust free. We then sent the car to Dannys Custom Auto Body in Long Beach California for the paint and body to be completed. While the car was in the body shop we had the opportunity to restore the interior, suspension, build the engine and restore any and all interior and exterior trim.
The engine starts off as the numbers matching origional 340 block, topped off with Edelbrock heads that were ported by Brian Hafflinger of Indio Motor Machine (IMM) www.immengine.com in Indio California. Brian also had a custom solid flat tappet cam built to compliment his port work. THe pistons are custom CP pistons with 10.5:1 compression to work good with pump gas. The engine makes approx 550 hp. THe carb was built by PC Carbs www.performancecarburetors.com in Ontario California. EXCELLENT CARB GUYS!!!
THe transmission is a ProTrans built 904 with a low gear set and a 10" Turbo Action torque converter.
THe rear suspension is stock suspension with Calvert Racing split monoleaf springs with the caltracs bars and Rancho rear shocks. The front suspension is also stock with lite drag torsion bars and QA1 stocker stars single adjustable front shocks.
The car weighs 3250 with the driver and has been 10.62 @ 125 in the 1/4 mile. The best 60 foot is 1.402 and its 1/8 mile best is 6.62 @ 100 mph.
Now, since mid 10s seems to slow for my brother, and he is scared of hurting the numbers matching 340 block, he has since purchased a new siamesed bore R3 block that has been punched out to 4.155" using the Callies 3.79 stroke crank for 411 inches. THe heads are being updated to Indy 360-1 heads that have been ported again by Brian Hafflinger of Indi Motor Machine www.immengines.com . The heads flow approx. 50 CFM more than the Edelbrocks do and a new custom Solid Roller cam has been designed by Brian to compliment the new heads. CP Pistons www.cppistons.com is again building the new pistons, this time with some more compression. Approx 12.5:1 We are shooting for 650 hp which I dont think will be a problem.
Since a 9 second car needs a full cage to be NHRA legal, and the car only has a roll bar, we will more than likely limit the power to get it to run right at the legal 10.0 second range. DOug doesnt want to cage a real 1969 Formula S Barracuda.
We have always liked cars that go fast on factory type front /rear suspensions with drag radials and ones that dont look like hard core race cars, rather just look like a slightly modded stock car. This was our goal from the beginning and we think we are almost there.
We did have the opportunity to enter the "True Street Challenge" at the 2008 Mopars at the Strip event in which all the cars had to drive throughout Vegas 30 miles in and out of bumper to bumper traffic in the heat with pump gas and all street legal equipment operational. We all had to make 2 passes on the same street legal tires that we drove through town on also. Well, we didnt win, but we did have the smallest engine and were the FASTEST car in the class. We should have owned a RED E-body with a HEMI. Anyways, Mopar Muscle Magazine featured this little car in the November issue and it was a GREAT article in which we are forever greatful.
We would love to enter a heads up class such as the West Coast Hot Rod Associations "Modified Production" class, however the rules do not favor SB Chrysler cylinder heads at all. Basically, if you dont have stock heads or Edelbrock heads, your heads are Illegal. Unfortunately it is impossible to be competative with those heads. So instead, we will just build a Wanna Be "Modified Production" car and just have fun. CHRYSLERS RULE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THere are many people that helped us along the way but most importantly is Bob Mazzolini of Bob Mazzolini Racing www.bobmazzoliniracing.com , Darius Tarman of CP pistons www.cppistons.com in Irvine California, Brian Hafflinger of IMM engines www.immengines.com , Ron Blanchard and Eddie Leabo of PC Carbs www.performancecarburetors.com and Ray and Crew over at Dougans Race Engines for superior machine work and balancing. All these guys are TOP notch trully want there customers to be number 1. ANyone looking at having any of this kind of work done. Feel free to contact them and you can take my word that you WILL be taken care of.
