Time for the next project. Got a 95 Impreza L, 1.8 AWD 5 Speed with about 150,000 miles. Paid about $1000 for it at auction. It ran and drove, motor has some pistion knock, looks like it had been overheated bad at some time. But Im not worried about the motor anyway, its already been pulled out. Car felt solid, no rattles, shifted good with no grinding.
Looks like a typical 95 car, has some dings & bumper scratches, broken side marker light and in need of a fender. I am planing on putting a 00-01 rs front end on it anyway. Then of course paint it blue. I will also need a turbo crossmember, fairly cheap (75-125$ used).
Now its time for a special delivery. $620 buys me an early JDM legacy 2.0 twin turbo motor. According to this guide ( http://www.autospeed.co.nz/cms/A_2775/article.html ) this motor is rated 184KW (247 HP) and 309NM (228 Ft Lbs) with 8.5 compression and forged pistons. With a single turbo, good exhaust & intake my best guess off the top of my head would be 235-240hp and maybe 500-600 less rpms...If anyone has a twin turbo converted to a single, I would like to hear any dyno #s they have gotten.
I will be changing it over to a single turbo. For those who dont know, the extra turbo and exhaust on the left side of the engine makes it so it does not easily fit in US cars, in Japan the steering column and brake master cylinder is on the right side of the car, on US cars they would be in the way of each other. Also people say there is a large dead spot when the 2nd turbo comes on, enough that some people think there is something wrong with it when it cuts out for a second. Since the legacy is a heavier car they needed more low end power, so thats why the small low rpm turbo and the bigger 4000+ rpm turbo. I dont know what to do with the trans, I will be using the 5 speed already in the car. I dont know what the gearing is this one, Ill look it up when I have time and it might be worth 100-200$ if someone can use it.
I need to find a single turbo manifold( about 80-100$ used ) and I have a td04 turbo from my 03 wrx, it just needs a new exhaust turbine rotor (from the catalytic converter in the up-pipe breaking apart) then a wrx intercooler(about 80$ used) and some misc piping, tubing & brackets.
I still am undecided about what ECU to run it with, so many choices, so little money. I am leaning to using an 02-03 US wrx ecu and reflashing it to remove unneeded items(egr, tumble valves, fuel temp sensor)
Now it's time to start work.
First thing I did was run a compression test, this was easy since the motor & trans were still together with the starter in place. Put in some oil to be safe since it was drained, pulled the plugs and spun it over for 10-15 seconds to get oil every where and the lifters pumped up.
Results:
1L: 90
2R: 155
3L: 130
4R: 150
Both right cylinders were low, could be head gasket, timing belt off time or in need of rings or a valve job. So Ill be safe and pull the heads and check it out. I was thinking about putting new rings in to freshen it up anyway.
Off with there heads !!
Luckly they use the same valve seals as the US 2.5 heads so I had them back in a few days.
Do not see any problems with the pistons or scratches on the cylinder walls and the head gaskets didnt look blown , so most likely we are just in need of a valve job.
