Handymans, this car is officialy a 160J, not a 710. You are right. The japanese code for all 710s, 160J, 140J, Violet ( as it was known in Japan )and the sport version for the 160J called 160JSSS ( which in South Africa, curiously, is known as 160"U"SSS, they replaced the "Y" for a "U" ) is indeed 710. All these cars have the number 710 stamped in their vin numbers and model code. But the 710 as sold by name never sold with IRS suspension. Only the 160J/160U/Violet sold with IRS. The 140J/710 was sold with leaf spring rear suspension. The front suspension is the same on all vehicles. Engine wise, the 710 was sold with L18 and L20B engines in US. In South America and Mexico, the 710 was sold with "J" series engines. The 140J was sold with L14 engines. The 160J/160U and the 160JSSS/160USSS was sold with L16 engines. The very top of the line Datsun model would had been a Datsun 160JSSS/160USSS with its IRS suspension, and the 710's L20B motor. We would have to impeach the then president of Nissan/Datsun Corp to have him respond to our questions of why no IRS in US?, or why no L20B in the 160JSSS/160USSS? No matter what Datsun it is ( 140J/160J/160U/SSS/710/Violet ) anyone has, it is indeed a very cool Datsun! Jaime.______________________________________________________
