I started out in life with a 87' Honda CRX junker. In no time flat it failed to pass a smog inspection so I decided it was time to retire it. I decided to buy a car that I would not have to smog. I sat down and went through my options and decided that I was going to stay with an import. The Datsun Z car first came to mind and after a three minute search on Craigs List I found a guy selling one, without an engine...this is my story.

The Engine

My Initial thought was to buy a L28, stroke it to 3.0L, slap on a turbo and head for the track. After some poking around I found that it wasnt going to be very cheap and would put a huge dent in my wallet. The SOHC was also kind of a turn off because it could only make so much power. My next thought was V6 or V8, however the VG30DETT swap was kind of new grounds and I am not that good of a fabricator. I refrained from buying a small block chevy because I wanted to keep it all import. Then it came to me, lets put in a Skyline engine! Initially I wanted to go RB26 but soon realized that my budget wouldnt allow for it and thats when I came across the RB25. I put in an order and it came shipped from Canada in about two weeks.

The Z

The car is a 1975 Datsun 280z, bought it for $280 cash without an engine or transmission. The guys plan was to put in an LS1 but was soon to be moving and needed to get rid of it. I happily made a deal and put it on a UHaul trailer I had rented and brought it home.

The Install

I went to McKinney Motorsports in Murrieta, CA to get all the parts to install the engine into the Z. I bought the Mounts, driveshaft, wiring harness, FMIC and exhaust system. I scoured the junk yards and was able to make my own throttle set up and found a radiator. I also bought the oil panpickup from a diff erent source so that the RB can clear the front axle.

Thanks! There actually ins't much lag with this turbo. I mean its way bigger than stock but its not a monster Supra single lol. Im on my second RB20 and my third transmission now. When its time to replace this motor, I will get a 25 and move my turbo over to it.
