This is my newest project. It was the first vehicle I ever had. Just an old Chevy truck. So far all I've done is mechanical stuff on it. The poor old thing has just over 330,000 miles on the original engine. To date I've had to replace the starter, radiator, put a new stereo in it, got a mahogony wood grain steering wheel for it, and did a complete tune up on her. I still have to do front and rear brakes and a few other small odds and ends things. I'm a bit stuck in what direction to go with it, but I do know I am going to have to replace all the front sheet metal and do alot of body work from the cab back. So, I'm open to suggestions and ideas. Let me know what you all think.
Update 3/16/09: Well, I've been working on the truck for about 6 months now. Really all I've been able to do is mechanical work. The most recent thing I've got done is all the brakes. The front wasn't too bad, replaced rotors, inner and outer wheel bearings, seals, pads, and calipers. The back was a different story. The first problem I had was with the park brake cable. Had one that was froze up, so I got it out of there and replaced it. One of the rear shoes had come completely apart and just tore the hell out of everything. So, I decided to replace everything on the rear as well. Once I got in there I found a rear axle seal was leaking, so I replaced both of those along with shoes, a new hardware kit, wheel cylinders, and drums. Everything went together very well and she will now stop on a dime. I also had to replace the belt tensioner, it had just about come apart. After I replaced the radiator and thermostat, I got a new fan shroud. The old one was starting to crack in several places. I pulled both running boards off and all the skirting too. I also had to do alot more work to the dash and driver's door panel than I had anticipated. I am just amazed at some of the things people do to vehicles. The stereo wiring was an absolute nightmare. Once I got that straightened out and had everything working as it was supposed to, I noticed alot of the dash reinforcements were starting to show their age. I had to do some of my own repair to get things back together for a nice fit and finish. The driver's door armrest was just about to fall off, so I had to pull the door panel and fasten it back to the door panel. I also had to replace the outside driver's door handle. Somebody had tried to break into it by prying a screw driver behind the handle and broke it. This was no easy feat. I used OE GM parts that made for a much simpler repair.
Looks a ton better with the running boards and skirting off.
The stereo turned out great. I was very pleased with how well the color of the panel matched the rest of the interior. For a 15+ year old truck, I have a pretty good interior to work with.
The woodgrain steering wheel turned out nice. If you plan to do an upgrade like this, do it right and either get a polished or satin black hub for your steering wheel. Don't use the cheap stuff it comes with.
I am driving the truck on a daily basis now trying to work out all the kinks and bugs. It's pretty much something every week that needs repaired. But, what can you expect for a truck with 330K miles. One of these days I will get to the good stuff and start brining her back to life cosmetically. Still trying to decided between a GMC front end or an Escalade front end. Thanks for looking and I will update more as I go.
