This is the photo used to sell the car to me for $650. Yep, those back tires are as flat as pancakes. The car is not as good as it looks as the grass it is sitting in did its damage.
Below she is just off the delivery truck from New Jesey.
I'll be posting more off and on as I go alo ng with this project.
She didn't run very well when I got her. Had to tow her up my road with a tow strap and my truck. Since then I've discovered that the idel screw was turned dcown so far she wasn't getting air. Now she runs but can't rev higher than 2500 without falling down. I discovered the fuel tank asemply is rusted and leaking fuel so I got anouther one from Ebay on order with a new Walburo pump already set up in the sending unit. A lot cheaper than the Grand that the dealers all want because Mitsubishi won't sell a tank and sending unit seperatly. even so, a grand is a lot of bread. Cat was also pluged and glowing orange so I have an exaust change to do as well. Although mine was working I put in the updated IAC. Starts better. Most of the sin in the car is due to sitting too long in tall grass. Found front drivers side crossmember was rusted through and filled in with a piece of angle iron bolted on to the good bits. I can just hear Stacy David now saying, "you guys that are doing this stuff have got to stop, your gonna kill yourselves". I ordered anouther from Ebay for $39.
Thank god for all the undercoating. ;)
Has no oil leaks except under the oil cap so I ordered an after market replacement. No oil at all coming out of the, for now, very short, exaust.
She has 175k on her so at this point I am just trying to get her running enough to see if she should be saved.
To be continued....
Ok, time for some more photos. Below is the engine bay, not much to talk about except that it had the original PCV valve in it. Battery box has been removed for de-rusting and bed lining. The only oil leak in the car is from the oil cap. I have a new one and will install it as soon as I am done with the fuel system and am ready to try and start it again.
Below you can see the old rusty cross member I mentioned earlier and the rusted piece of angle iron that was bolted on to make up the difference. You can also see the Ebay replacement I got for $40. It came covered in old oil and dirt but with some degreaser and a wire tooth brush it turned out great. has been bed lined and looks better than new.
As you can see there is a lot of rust under this car. The exaust heat shield is patially rusted out and partly disintigrated from the heat of a bad cat. Ordering a used replacement.
The oil pan ...ect do not look good as well but sound solid and maybe able to be treated and bed lined.
I was finally able to get the down pipe of after several days of fighting with the back to bolts. It took a combination of an air impact gun set beyond its limits, a torch, hot liquid wrench, and a cheepy hammer to get them to let go. Un fortunatly they are studs so I had to save the nuts for reuse. I think you can see that the replacement is much nicer, also at 2 1/2 inches larger as well. The old pipe had a hole right by the O sensor that I hadn't seen until I got the down pipe off the car.
And here we come to the real bane of my existance for the last two weeks and it's not done with me yet. My eveloution of the 3000Gt has drain holes in the trac of the rear hatch. Unfortunatly, the previouse owner never took the time to put a air hose in them and blow out the gray sludge that was plugging them up. This caused the rain to invade the trunk and leak out right on top of the fuel tank bulk head. Every exposed metal fuel line is almost like powder and had to be replaced along with the whole sending unit assembly and pump as that was the best way I could get one with out paying Mitushibishi $1000 for a new tank as that is the only way they will sell a bulkhead.
Got lucky and found a good assembly that was supposed to go in a VR4 project but the car was sold before it was used. It will be hard wired and came with the heavy duty wire, fuse, and relay. Even got a new Walbro GS341 fuel pump. All for $80.00. Didn't come with new nuts though and I can tell you the old ones are a pain to get off and the new ones are not the same size as it says on the 3SI tips page.
Just wanted to finish this entry off on a high note by showing the new down pipe temporarily installed. ;)
More later...
