Phase 3 : Gotta go faster.
After running the car for a couple years up to the 115mph average speed class (top speed 140mph), it was time to go faster. The low compession motor home engine was reliable, but wasnt going to take the car where I wanted to go. The 727 had to go too.
In 2006 the car was gone through again, a 1968 383 was built with Indy heads and 10.5:1 compression, a fuel cell added, a fire supression system, more aluminum work completed, and the 4 speed 833 AOD was added in lieu of the old 727. The old 8-1/4 axle that I had built with 2.45 gears went away in favor of an 8-3/4 with 3.23's. The roll bar was upgraded to a full roll cage.
New 10.5:1 383 with Lakewood scattershield.
22 gallon fuel cell and battery relocate....much safer.

And run it some more ! (Photo: George Suennen).
The bulge hood found its way back onto the car to improve aerodynamics. The car now runs in the 135mph average speed class. Top speed obtained on the course has been 165mph, which is limited to 168mph maximum in the 135mph class to promote safety.
Racing speed classes start at 85mph average speed up to 170mph or Unlimited. You run against the the other cars in YOUR speed class, and any car in good condition with some basic safety preparation can do this. The safety requirements are reasonably minimal for lower speeds and increase as the cars go faster. Cars are realeased in intervals, so you are running against the road and the clock, not head to head with other cars. The road is all yours! You can even have a passenger ("navigator") ride with you. Come on out and have some fun !
