this is my new motor while it was still in the blazer that it came in. the story of me coming into this engine is a weird one. i got a great deal on it!
i was at work one night, when the foreman from the other side of the shop's wife came in screaming at him. apparently they were going through a nasty divorce, and i heard her say, "and im gonna make that f**kin motor into a damn boat anchor before this shit is over!!!!" i thought nothing of this and went about my business.
later, on my break, i ran into him. he knew i had been in the process of tearing down a 350 for rebuild. what he didn't know was that my budget for the rebuild was only about $1000. he asked me, "hey josh, you wanna skip the build on that engine ,and buy a fresh big block?" i told him " i dont know, how much you want? whats been done to it? how long ago did you have it done?" all the answers were the right ones except the price. "$1500," he said," and that takes the whole truck!" well i had no use for the rest of the full size blazer so i tried to bargain with him. i just wanted the motor. i told him,"how bout you just sell me the motor for 1000 and keep the blazer, i really dont have any use for the rest of it." he told me he'd think about it, and i told him i had to talk to my wife before i did anything. well she's cool, so she told me to go for it, but i could only spend 1200. so i went back to work with an offer. he told me it was a deal, and that he would have rather sell it for whatever i could give him, than let his b*tch soon-to-be-x-wife get it, just so it wouldn't go to waste. so i went and checked it out and gave him the money.
the day after i picked it up, he came up and asked me,"did you do anything with that truck yet?'' i told him no. he said"good, i want the body and trans back, what do you want?" i told him $300, knowing the local yard would only give me bout $150. surprisingly, he didn't haggle at all like i excpected him to, and it was a deal. that 4000 mile fresh bbc was mine for only$900!!!!
score!!!!
this is the blazer from the story i just told. it looked a whole hell of alot better after i ripped off the aluminum running boards for scrap.
this is me at my friend larry's shop while im pulling the motor out. im on the phone cuz my wife wouldn't leave me alone that day. while i was pulling out the motor, i took the tach, radiator, fan, gauges, and shift knob out too. i didn't use all those parts on my car, but its always nice to have spares, or just to have them laying around for trade or another project.
after i got the motor out, i had to replace the valve cover, oil pan, and intake gaskets. they leaked like a cheap diaper on a fat kid from a combination of over torquing and the truck sittin out in the yard for two and a half years in michigan weather.
also, it was painted black, which i find to be a boring color for a motor, so i painted it fire engine red before installing it in my caprice.
me and the motor, i was so glad to get her out of the blazer so i could move along. btw, holy mutton chops, batman!
this is larry. i think he was trying to tell me his finger hurt.
i sold these manifolds to a friend who had a mud project, i had to weld them up for him first, though. you know big block parts are getting scarce when people will buy cracked manifolds off you!
one of the things on my to do list is to rebuild this holley. its so old that if you enlarge the picture, you'll notice that it still has the holley logo from like the late 70's/early 80's. (send me a message if i'm wrong).
