For about 4 or 5 weeks I kept seeing this 68 Coronet listed in the classifieds as a wrecked car. I figured it must be pretty bad if nobody bought it all this time but figured what the Hell I’ll call. I asked the lady how bad it was and she said it was totaled. She said a Cady ran a red light and wiped out the front of the Coronet at full speed. So now I’m thinking, this thing must be really tore up but was then surprised when she told me she drove it home. What? That doesn’t sound totaled to me. So I asked if it was dumping fluids. She said no. Huh? Was it making a knocking fan into the radiator noises? She said, yes. Ok, I just got to see this thing myself.
My Dad gave me a ride out there into L.A. to check it out. I knocked on the door and she answered at which point she told me it was around back. When I turned the corner I thought damn this thing is clean. Sure the Fenders and front bumper was wasted but it didn’t look bad enough to call totaled. I popped the hood and found part of the broken shroud, the top of the shroud, lying in the bottom of the shroud where it can be hit by the fan. After pulling that out I started it with our battery because the one in the car was dead from sitting the last few weeks. I drove it around the block, got out of the car and handed her the $500 asking price. My Dad who was talking to her as I test drove it later told me she said she would take less. I didn’t care, it was worth it! I guess I should mention the fact that this about 10 years ago when 318 cars were still cheap and plentiful. Later on, I bought a totaled 68 Coronet 500, I pulled the 383 and 727 and dropped it in place of the 318 and boy it was fun even though is was pretty stock. Just a few years ago I got to the condition you see here which now has a 440 w/ Edelbrock RPM heads and intake and this thing really gets on and roasts the tires effortlessly.
