Tinton's 1986 Pontiac Fiero

The Car

This is my 1986 Pontiac Fiero SE that I got back in November 2005. It has a 2.8L pushrod V6 with 140 hp @ 5200 RPM and 170 tq @ 3600 RPM and a 4-speed manual transmission. When I got it it had 130,000 miles on it, but somewhere around 133,000 miles the connection to the odometer in the dashboard went out and its either stopped working or its really really inaccurate. Right now I would guess that it has 160,000-165,000 miles on it. To my knowledge its the original engine with no major rebuild, the original transmission, and its on its 2nd clutch. Its pretty reliable, the only major repair/breakdown I've had is from the waterpump failing fall 2006. Even though it overheated several times the engine continues to run fine. I've also managed to get 44 mpg out of this car, highway mileage, but that was an extreme circumstance. Highway I usually get 31-34 mpg and city 21-24 so its not that bad for a V6.

Plans

This car is slow though, no doubt. In the future I want to put a 3800SC Series II or III in this car and swap out the output shaft and differential from the transmission with an economy Muncie 4-speed. I think this should give the transmission a longer first gear and better cruising rpms on the highway, but with the torque of the supercharged V6 it should still be able to pull hard in any gear. This would also drastically raise the top speed of the car. Stock I've taken this car to 115 mph and it just doesn't have any more RPM's, its at about 5200-5500. With the gear ratio changes though and the 3800SC it should hit 130 or more.

Besides the engine swap, in the near future I want to put in an anti-bumpsteer kit. I also have a battery relocation kit (to the front) that I'm going to install soon.

Performance Mods

This car has MANY modifications to it. Before I got it it had headrest speaker seats from a '84 or '85 Fiero installed in it. The door skins came from a later model Fiero. The steering wheel comes from a '84 Fiero. Since I got the car I also put in a new stiffer front swaybar and installed a rear swaybar (the car didn't have a rear swaybar stock), a Z24 brake upgrade in the front (9 3/4" vented disc rotors, compared to stock 9 3/4" solid disc), and KYB struts in the rear. The car came with a 85 mph speedometer stock (and the wrong 1 from a 84 Fiero, it was side-lit this model year had backlit gauges), and I changed it out to 1 from a Fiero GT that's 120 mph. I also installed a whole new front wiring harness from a 1987 Fiero with better headlight motors. The stock, earlier design motors (for 84-86 Fieros) were so bad I had to leave the headlights up for a while but the later design are easier to repair and now the pop-up headlights work. The car also has a gutted cat so it sounds better than stock but I need to get a better muffler in the near future. I also had a friend of mine shorten the shifter (cutting it and re-threading it) so its 2" shorter than stock. The car has also gone through a few different wheels and tires. It originally came with stock 14" steel Pontiac Tech wheels and 215/65/14's all around. Then I swapped wheels with my old '88 Fiero, some 15" black honeycomb wheels with 215/55/15's in front and 225/55/15's in back with decent performance tires. Right now the car has Exel 003 17x7.5 wheels with Fuzion ZRi 225/45/17's in front and 235/45/17's in back.

Most recently (10.22.2008) I installed a Rodney Dickman adjustable polyurethane dogbone to replace the original rubber-bushing dogbone that failed and was causing the engine to move around when I shifted. I also put in a Rodney Dickman decklid-strut to hold the decklid up, since the stock springs holding it up were weak.

Audio Mods

So far it has aftermarket front 4x10 speakers (don't remember what brand), the stock speakers in the headrests, and disconnected 4x6 speakers in the B-pillars. My Fiero also has a Pioneer headunit with XM Satellite Radio, which I installed myself. In the future I need to get better headrest speakers, good speakers for the B-pillars (and to connect them with new wiring) and a small sub. I'll probably need a new headunit to do this, but this headunit is fine for now.

That is a nice looking car. I love the wheels, they match perfectly with the car. Isn't there any 5 speed manual transmission that you can put on your car? That for sure would help your engine a lot, so that you wouldn't need a swap too soon.
