Windshield Washer Hood to Arm Swap

sage_diede's 2001 Chevrolet Blazer

This page is dedicated to Shaving the Windshield Washer Squirters on the hood, BUT keeping the functionality of the washer nozzles.  I have stated the job, but I haven't taken any pics yet.  I will include GM part numbers for the ease of anyone looking to do this modification, themselves.  The New Nozzle actually installs underneath the wiper arm, just like the new GM vehicles.  I am working on keeping everything very well hidden, and appear to be factory installed.  I am waiting on the passenger side nozzle from GM, but as soon as I receive it, I will post pics of the install, so keep in touch!

Here's the start of the part numbers that are required for the washer nozzle swap:

GM# 22094728 - You will need two of these.  They are the nozzles themselves.  This is the only piece you will get from GM.  Everything else can be purchased at a parts store.  I picked up everything else from Hedahls Parts Plus, but these numbers will cross with other auto parts stores as well. $35.20 for the pair

MTM 47101 - Hose connector - A Misc. Pack of Vacuum hose connectors $3.93  You may need two of these kits depending on how you hook it up.

MTM 47100 - Vacuum Tees - A Misc. Pack of Vacuum tees $3.89

MTM 02365 - Rubber Grommet Asst. - A Misc. Pack of Small Wire Grommets $1.98

GAT 27045 - Gates Windshield Washer / Vacuum Tubing - I picked up 9 feet which should be more than plenty to hook up the two washer nozzles.  Remember not to undercut the washer hoses, as they will need to move with the wiper arms. $3.68

The total for the above modification, including tax, was $49.49.  Not to shabby for an easy nozzle swap that will look great!

First of all, remove the wiper arms.  They remove by pulling up the plastic cover at the pivot point of the arm.  There will be a nut on the pivot point that needs to be removed and then the arm can be pulled off.

The GM nozzles (GM# 22094728) has a small nipple on the bottom designed to fit the nozzle onto the arm snugly without vertical movement.  I drilled a small hole into the wiper arm, NOT ALL THE WAY THROUGH, where I wanted the nozzle to sit.

Run the vacuum tube down the inside of the arm inside the spring and pull through.

Next, a hole will have to be drilled at the bottom of the blade on the side that faces the hood.  Drill this hole about 3/4 inch from the hinge of the blade.  Place the rubber wire grommet into the drilled hole and insert the vacuum tubing into the grommet.  The rubber grommet will protect the vacuum line and make the install look more professional.  Repeat this same step for the other side.  The arms on the Blazer/S10 are very close to the same, so the process is almost identical.

A hole will need to be drilled in the plastic cowl panel below the windshield.  You will need to use another rubber grommet in this hole, also.  Run your vacuum line into this hole, but remember to leave enough line to allow the wiper arms to operate without stretching or kinking the vacuum line.

Lastly, Use a vacuum tee on the driver's side line to splice into the passenger side line, similar to the factory installation.  Connect the Vacuum line to your plastic tubing that is still on the vehicle, and make sure you test the sprayer system and all connections before finishing the installation.

I ran the vacuum line underneath the fender into the engine bay and connected it to the original washer hose.  The tee was ShurTaped to the cowl panel just above the two bolts below the windshield.

Also, if you are shaving the tailgate on the Blazer, remember to unplug the rear windshield washer pump.  That way it will not operate if the button is pushed.  DO NOT REMOVE the pump unless you plan to plug the hole in the reservoir, because the washer fluid will drain out.  The rear windshield pump is the upper pump, not the lower one.  You could possibly hook up both pumps to the front nozzles, but I chose not to go this route.

I will post pics as I get them.  These instructions are very vague, but I will revise them and add pics as I finish the installation on my own vehicle.  I will add more detailed instructions and easy installation tips when I test the system on my Blazer.  I am not implying that this system is perfect, or better than the factory system, it is just an alternative to having no washer sprayers when doing a shave job, or to give your vehicle a clean look.  Hopefully it works with few kinks and imperfections!

Also, if you have a version of this mod, please feel free to contact me with any info or suggestions.  Or if you have any questions about this mod, I can be reached at skid_racer@hotmail.com  Hopefully, I can give you some insight to installing your own kit.
