This car is a 1965 Factory Five Racing Spyder GT.  It is number 4 of 38 sold (out of 40 total cars) before Factory Five discontinued the model, making it one of the rarest cars on CarDomain!

Factory Five only sells kits, so unless a customer contracts someone to build the car, owners are charged with building these cars themselves (with some help from friends time to time).  I built my car over the last seven years and still am not finished - it needs paint, some final touches here and there (e-brakes, headlight plexiglass covers, etc) and will probably never really be "done."  Here is a picture of the kit after it arrived in 2003, when I was living in Davis, California:

That's what I started with.  The body comes in a very rough post-mold gelcoat finish and the separate panels (doors, nose, trunk) are oversized to be trimmed for fit.   You don't want to hear me yack about the build when you could just see it for yourself though!  Check out the following pages for a chronological photo timeline.  Jump to page 7 for a little info about me.

Page 2:  Photos from chassis roller through aluminum subpaneling into brake system build.

Page 3:  Finishes the brake lines, tackles the wiring (yeuck!) and shows the engine install.

Page 4:  Finishes the engine install, shows more work on the wiring, and details the work I had to do on my dash.  This page also includes some early body photos and shows the car starting to come together.

Page 5:  Shows the "finished" engine (aka finished enough to run), interior work, the exhaust install and some more aluminum paneling.

Page 6:  Includes most of my most recent beauty shots.  There's a few pictures in there too of my seat install and some vinyl work I did on the dash.

Update 1/25 - Well, my original to-do list was so successful I think I'll update it with a few new additions.  First up I'll list what's still remaining from the original list (5 from 15, not bad):

3) Headlight angle req adjustment
5) Windshield req installation
9) Emissions control devices require appropriate resistors
10) Horns not installed
15) E-brake boot not installed

And the new stuff:
1) Dash vinyl requires repair/dash reinstallation
2) Alarm upgrade/installation
3) Nose reinstallation
4) PAINT!
5) Headlight compartment block-off panels
6) Final post-paint reassembly

Update 2/10 - Car is gone for paint.  Stewart Transport picked it up last week, which was quite the adventure... they had to roll out an FFR Roadster to put mine on the upper deck of the semi.  That car got a LOT of attention!  Once my car was on the upper deck ramp the truck's hydraulics were malfunctioning and it took 'em a couple of hours to get the car up where it needed to be.

I've also finished my last flight in pilot training! I am now at Altus AFB, OK for follow-on training and will be moving to my next assignment, Pease ANGB, NH to fly KC-135Rs after I'm done here.
