Well, here's why my $2007 turned $2008 and now $2010 Challenge car won't be ready this year.  My daughter is turning 16 and I've spent the summer getting her car ready.  Car was fairly sound but needed a lot of cosmetics.  It's a '93 Mustang convertible with a 4cyl 2.3L and automatic.  Looks cool but is sloooooowwwww.  Mechanically, I've put in a new radiator, new exhaust from cat back, new (to us) GT wheels and tires, fixed the windows to go up and down, new headlights/wipers/filters/etc.  Cosmetically rubbed out the paint, new stereo system, cleaned it, cleaned it again, scrubbed the top many times, cleaned it some more, touched up a bunch of nicks, re-blacked all the trim, polished the lenses.  I'm sure I missed a bunch of small stuff too.
