Every time I look at my dream car sitting there, with the ignition key in my hand, I ask myself, "How did this happen?"
Well, it's a long story.
I'm one of them rascal youngin' owners. Born in 87, after DMC went under and BTTF was old hat.
When I was little, I was the BIGGEST fan of Back to the Future III because I thought the train was the coolest thing ever. When we went on vacation to NC, it was the one movie the tiny local mercantile ALWAYS had for me. (Of course, now I can't watch III any more, because of the OTHER train...)
One day in the early 2000s, probably mid 2001? I was watching TV, flipping channels, and BTTF 1 came on. I hadn't seen it all the way through since I was little... I turned it on RIGHT in the parking lot scene, right before Marty said "You built a time machine... out of a DELOREAN?!"
I had one of those "That was a real car?!" moments that so many of us youngsters have. Within the hour I did a bunch of research and found DMCNews and I was hooked.
Over the next few years I tried so hard to get one. I even tried to get my dad to loan me money for a truly horrendous shell of a car up in Tennessee, which he wisely refused. In 2002 I found out that one of my dad's old high school buddies had one and drove it to work. I started riding my bike by the guy's repair shop every day, sometimes stopping and looking. Once I asked if I could sit in it and he said yes....
Eventually I changed high schools, but my knowledge about the car and obvious salivation problems made an impression. In 2006, a few months after I got my first car (my first car that I would own and drive, anyway), he calls my dad and says he decided to finally sell it, and he wants it to go to me. He refused a cash offer of $25,000 for it because he wanted it to go to someone who appreciated the car. He knows I'm going to baby it. (I've had it less than three weeks and I've hand-polished it three times in addition to the mechanical work I'm doing on it almost every day.)
