SLEEPY EYE / QUAD LIGHTS HOW-TO for any '89-'92 Ford Probe

"Sleepy Eye" Headlights:

Materials needed: wire cutter, wire crimper, male blade connectors, 15A fuse, wire, push-botton momentary switch, aftermarket quad lights (if doing the quad light setup), screwdriver, zip-ties, etc.

Directions:

1.  Disconnect negative battery terminal.

2. Pull fuse labelled “retra” from engine compartment main fuse box. This fuse strictly controls the headlight motors.

3.  Cut 2 lengths of wire about 8 feet long (rough estimate) and connect a male blade connector to one end of each wire.....then clip both connectors onto the exposed blades in the fuse box where you just took out the retro fuse.

4.  Run the 2 wires through the firewall through a grommet just by the clutch master cylinder.

5. Remove the plastic shroud under the dash above the pedals and retrieve the 2 wires you just snaked in there. Then run the wires though the bottom of the center consol (under radio and ash tray) to the shifter.

6. Find a suitable place for a momentary switch to be mounted and run the wires to the switch. I prefer a momentary switch that is a “push button” style as it is easier to make small clicks with.  I chose to mount my momentary switch on the plastic shroud at the bottom of the shifter boot...not only for easy location but also this is an easy to come by part so cutting a hole in it didnt scare me.

7. Install female blade connectors on the ends of the wire and connect to the switch.

8. Splice in a 15A fuse on either one of the wires in a suitable place.

9. Congrats...you now have control over the height of your lights.

10. Turn on your normal headlight light switch.....nothing should happen....now tap the momentary switch and you should see the lights pop up to depending on how long you hold the switch or how many taps you give it.  Turn off normal headlight switch...lights should turn off but should still be raised.  Hold momentary switch and lights will close.

Quad "Angel Eye" lights:

1. Manually (or with your newly installed momentary switch) raise the lights and turn off the vehicle and disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.

2. Remove outer plastic shroud around each headlight (2 screws and pop off).

3. Unscrew and remove the metal frame around each headlight bulb.

4. Disconnect each headlight wires and remove from the socket.

5. Remove the metal sub-frame that is behind each bulb along with the spring and any other crap in there.  You should be left with just the headlight cover itself with a metal shelf underneath it that is welded in there from what I can see.

6.  This “metal shelf” will be the anchor point for your new round bulbs.  This step will differ depending on what brand of lights you buy and what brackets come with them.  I basically zip-tied my lights to the metal shelf once I got them orientated where I wanted them.  I know it sounds jimmy rigged but it works great and I didn’t have to drill anything.  This makes it really easy to return back to stock.  I used APC 7-color driving lights.

7. Wire both negative wires from each bulb into one common male blade connector.  Connect to the negative terminal of the stock headlight socket.

8.  You have 2 options now:  Wire both positive wires from each bulb into a common male blade connector and connect to positive terminal of stock headlight socket.  This will turn both lights on when you turn on your headlight switch, BUT will turn them both off if you turn on your brights.

OR if you can find aftermarket bulbs that are considered “brights”, then wire them in separately into the “brights” positive terminal on the stock headlight socket, leaving you with one headlight and one bright that operate separately.  I chose to wire mine together as they are a weaker bulb and look better with both bulbs on.

NOTE: These are just driving lights and are great for the city.  On the highway they are equivelant to driving with your normal headlights on.  You lose your “brights” option which could be bad if you do a lot of night-time highway driving.

9. Cut original plastic shroud around headlights to fit around your new quad lights...then re-install plastic shroud around your new lights.

Enjoy your new sexy lights that you can control the height of.  You can also turn your headlights off and still have them set at a desired height by not touching the momentary switch after the main headlight switch is off.  This is great for if you run into the store quick and turn the car off and don’t want to mess with adjusting the height of your lights after.
