Subaru Leone RX II, homologated by FIA for Rally Group A.
"The STi of 80's". For 1987 Group A became the top class and the Subaru was one of the very few cars combining 4x4, Turbo and Factory Rally Suspension (Fully independent MacPherson strunt front and trailing arm rear with Anti-sway bars)
Rally History:
First event for Subaru Leone RX: Safari 1985
Interesting was that Subaru used the Coupé version for the Safari 1987, on all other events the works team entered with this generation Leone, they used the Leone Sedan RX Turbo. There seemed no particular reason behind this as in size and weight there was absolutely no difference between these cars. More interesting would have been to try the technically related but very differently shaped Alcyone XT Turbo, but that never happened.
Subaru Rally Team Japan led by Noriyuki Koseki (founder of Subaru Tecnica International) entered one or a few rallies per season with Subaru Leone coupé, sedan DL and RX Turbo in the World Rally Championship between 1980 and 1989. Drivers for individual rallies included Ari Vatanen, Per Eklund, Shekhar Mehta, Mike Kirkland, Possum Bourne and Harald Demut.
