This is my other 1988 Mazda MX-6. It is a GT turbo with a five speed manual transmission. I actually have three of these cars(all 88's too), the first being my daily driver, this one the garage queen, and the other my parts car.
This car is mostly stock and it originally had an automatic transmission. The car had numerous problems when I got it and it had been sitting in a garage for about 11 years. It was smoking like crazy and the previous owner thought the turbo was shot. I pulled the turbo thinking it was bad but realized the oil return line was kinked. Four new turbo hoses and it was back together.
Not long after I got it registered the transmission gave out. Luckily I had a complete 5 speed parts car sitting around. The transmission swap became a four month on and off project but I got all the parts swapped over. This car has everything it would have if it came with a five speed from the factory. When I swapped the transmission it got all new parts: clutch, pressure plate, axles, motor mounts, all new hoses, and a ton more stuff I am forgetting. After the trans was back together it got a new exhaust from the down pipe back with a Magna Flow muffler at the back.
I did the transmission swap a couple years back but have only put about 4,000 miles on it in that time. I try to drive it at least twice a month and use it to run to Arizona for lottery tickets. Here's some pics of how it looks now.
