This is one of these old classic cars that is fairly straight and in good condition for its age.  If you’re going to pay good money for a used project car, this is the smart way to do it.  Any intelligent car guy will tell you that.  I purchased this car as a toy project to turn into a 16v and not intending to sell. Then I serendipitously found a 16V in good shape a few months later! (This is my 3rd Rocco over the past 27 years.)  So now I don’t need this really fast and semi built up 8V Rocco and I just don’t have the time now.  I bought this from another Rocco enthusiast, Kiznile, in Sacramento, CA and drove it back up summer of ‘08.   So it’s passed the more stringent CA smog test! I think I am the 3rd or 4th owner of this great car.  I would love for this car to continue to go to another Rocco enthusiast rather than someone that just wants a car or to turn this into a drag racer.  Kiznile has got some great restored projects on CarDomain.  There’s been some great modifications done to this JH code big valve engine and close ratio 9A tranny = GTI setup! This car is fast and nimble but she still needs an eventual paint job, sunroof parts and new upholstery.  Serious buyers only, no joy rides please - cash in hand when you come for a test drive.  She shifts fast and sure with the EMPI rabbit shifter and Eurosport weighted short shift kit.  Already quick and nimble in her time, the horsepower and low end torque has been quite improved but I don’t have any dyno stats.  Stock is about 90HP and I would guess she’s currently around 105 – 110HP now – about a 14% -18% increase!  An early 80’s Porsche 944 hits 0-60 in about 8.7 seconds.  She should hit 0-60mph in around 7 - 9 seconds! That’s due just to an Audi 5000 throttle body, Autotech Tri-Y Header, Techtonics (TT) Cat and Cat back and TT sprockets!  The adjustable cam sprocket is tuned right now for a bit more power in the high end.  Just add an Autotech cam should bring you up another 13HP to about 118HP – 123HP for a 24% - 27% amazing increase! The next step is to lighten and balance the flywheel, crank (maybe knife edge it as well) and rods for quick response and more energy efficiency.  Do a bit more of the suggested simple mods here or put in a 16v and you’ll beat the Porsche!  A turbo and/or different engine could be the next project. Throw in an Autotech cam with matching springs, Megasquirt or TEC ignition/fuel management system, port and polish the intake/exhaust manifolds and make her come alive even more! Next thing you know, you’ll have a 150HP -170HP screamer w/o turbo.  The 16V sport tuned suspension is nicely balanced between the Bilstein shocks, Eibach Sportline Springs and the BF Goodrich tires for a good comfortable Washington nimble road ride. Many of the mods have been described in Volkswagen Sport Tuning for Street and Competition by Per Shroeder.  The horsepower to weight ratio of this car along with German engineered steering is awesome!96969's 1985 Volkswagen Scirocco

To keep her stock, well, just a couple of more items such as replacing the sunroof components, the missing power steering (PS) and A/C and this will be a great ride! You can find them used all for under $300 or new for around $800.  The rest of the restoration work is sweat time and cosmetics to your taste! The reason the A/C and PS and a few other items were removed by the previous owner was so that the car would be lighter and used as a track/canyon racer in CA.  Drop in a rebuilt 16V and you’ll have a screamer! I have a 16V short block available that goes with this sale.

Kiznile, the guy that owned this before me was meticulous about keeping the engine interior clean. That another reason why I bought it.  It burns no oil. He put on a new head gasket, re-honed the block, replaced the piston rings and had the head redone. The engine should have around 5000 – 10000 miles on it.  So at this point, you’ll have a strong engine that should need no work other than scheduled tune ups and oil changes for quite awhile!  I’ve done more exterior detailing and pressure washing so the engine compartment, under carriage and nooks are crannies are even cleaner.  But, you’ll want to repaint her eventually.  She has what we call a 10’ wax job. She looks pretty good till you get a bit closer.  Her body is fairly straight though and undercarriage in great shape, not bad for a 24 year old car- again, why I bought her! The freeflow Dynomax muffler gives it a good low sound and all around free flow performance without blowing your eardrums.  Buy this car and stay in touch with me. We can discuss your future plans and I’d love to see the progress!

Updated electrical wiring. Headlights are bright! Separate wiring and relays for lighting system updated.  No old VW dim headlights! There might be a broken wire (bulb is brand new) for the left rear back up light.  Backup switch is brand new.

This car has been getting a lot of love over time in its restoration.  These cars are becoming rarer and now in collector status.  No rust on this baby except for one small spot under the rear passenger window right in the middle! 96969's 1985 Volkswagen Scirocco 96969's 1985 Volkswagen Scirocco

It’s been treated with naval jelly.  I would not have bought her if she had rust – too much work and a bad investment. One thing that’s nice about west coast cars. Working underneath her is easy since nothing is rusted together.

Everything works except for the sunroof.  You'll need to hunt down a new interior mechanism for the sunroof which isn’t too hard to find on VW Vortex and there might be one in an 88 rocco over at Campbell Nelson. Wired shut, easy to undo from the interior.  Needs a washer bottle for the front windshield.  Windshield is about 3 years old and in great condition.

 Extras:

-sachs clutch: Clutch was purchased 4 years ago but the current clutch is still working strong!

-G60 valve cover

-ABD Big bore intake

-1.8L 16v code PL short block! Rebuild the engine and drop it in for your own 16V scirocco!  Bore out the block to a 2.0, keep the 1.8L head and you’ll have some great power along with low end torque! Or lower the compression (very easy to do with a spacer) and turbo it.  If you don’t want the engine, I’ll take $3800 for this ole gal!

-Odometer mileage is approx 177k. Since the engine has been redone it should have only about 5k-10k on it.

I’ve found Campbell Nelson in Arlington to be a good source.  I know that they have a PS reservoir and hoses up there right now. -1988 scirocco instrument cluster, the odometer/speedo is original to the car though.  The only difference from the ’82-87 cluster is the dummy light (upshift indicator) has been replaced with the coolant temperature gauge.

-Trim pieces are good shape, all that have been cracked or damaged have been replaced. Seals are in good shape except for the rear hatch, any leaks found have been repaired so she should be leak free which is a bit endemic to these cars.  Rear hatch seal is torn above the license plate area but only leaks when washing the car. All rain water ports are clear of debris.

-Storage tray under dash for driver’s side. Passenger side is missing

-Door cards are in good shape, storage in door trays

-Dash has a few age/sun cracks. Sunshade for the car front windshield and it keeps the car about 10* cooler!

-Bottom front seat cushions have new upholstery I sewed in. Drivers side back rest has some upholstery repair done to it.  Definitely looks better than before, it was torn to shreds.  Leather driver’s side bolster is worn (typical) and needs to be repaired/replaced. You can get nice custom upholstery through http://www.vwupholstery.com/rabbit.html

Stereo:

-Alpine head unit

-Eclipse speakers in door but I’m not sure if they’re good.  I am not sure if they’re blown or if the head unit just does not have enough clean power so they are clipping.  I am thinking they are clipping since they don’t rattle like a blown speaker does. I am more into driving this car and the sound of the motor than the sound system.  This system came with the car when I bought it.
