OddballStang's 1966 Ford Mustang

The Ford letters from the hood.  When the car was repainted in Europe the previous owner (Chuck) took them off before it hit the paint booth.  The guys painting the car saw the hole to mount them in and filled them in before checking anything out, so, Chuck just never put them back on.

Two pics of the car outside.  The right side of the car looks the best and was the side that was hidden in the garage

The one on the left is one of my favorites, on the right you can see the double set of taillights that were installed while the car was in Europe.  Right now the car is sitting on four different tires because they happened to be the same size as Chuck's Mitsubishi.  Oddly enough the wheels would have fit right onto the Mitsu but Chuck didn't know that, and he probably wouldn't want 4.5 inch wheels on something he has to drive all the time.  So those wheels are going to be replaced . . .

With a set of these.

Oh my god I can see the ground in the engine bay!  Oh that and the tiny Motorcragt 1 barrel carb.  I know somebody out there might pick up on the fact that by '66 the engine should be blue, not red, well it looks like that was repainted at some point, and in places where the paint red paint is falking off you can see blue underneath.  A couple of places on the valve cover, and down on the head show it.

Working in that engine bay is going to be nice and easy with all that room.  The yellow that is poking through in places is apparently some sort of high quality primer that the Navy was using, Chuck got his hands on some.  On the right is the new brake master cylinder that my uncle put in, the finish has just worn off thats all.

Some shots of the interior now.  The Pony door panel, and the other elements that tipped us off that it was originally a Pony interior car, the white painted dash, the fake wood trim, and the fake wood steering wheel.

None vinyl seats!  Well mostly anyways, the cloth inserts are still in good shape, and there's just that little bit of discoloration at the top.  It was tough to take more pictures of the seats because there was an old car cover in the back, along with a door window.  Unlike everything else that supposed to be wood in the car the shift knob actually is wood Chuck made it at some point.

The trunk was full of parts and stuff for the car that Chuck had accumulated over the years, including among other things a header for the 200.

While I was in Maine last week Chuck told me that he had driven the car from Southern Spain, through France, through Alps into Italy and all the way down to Sicily where he was stationed with the Navy.

He also told me that he was pulled over within the first week or so of being back in Maine, when the car had the header on, dual exhaust and cherry bombs, and still wearing its Italian plates.   After that he decided to take the dual exhaust and header off.

wow i really like your stang. i know exactly what you were thinking when you opened the hood and could see the ground.lol its hard to get use too. my favorite thing about your car is that it has a history to it. my car was also owned by a guy in the navy. it makes the car just a little more unique i think. so are you going to try to keep it the way it is or modify even more? check out my mustang and give any advice you can..im still learning so i will take it all into consideration

thanks for stopping by my stude lark site. Love the stang, love those six's, same motor as the australian falcon, bloody good reliable motors, simple to work on, and a surprisingly torquey open road tourer. Will keep watching

Dual tail lights! That looks a lot better than I would've imagined it. Very unique. Are you planning on keeping them like that? Check out my 70 Stang project sometime. Let me know what you think!
