Today, I just picked up a 90 VW Cabi. Its in pretty bad shape, with a lake on the floor, and mold growing on the side. With some work, it should clean up and and show much promise.

Stay Tuned

John

Update July 16, 2008: After much work and diag, I have the car running. Ended up being a bad Digifant controller. $8.50 at Pull a Part. Not bad for a $200 part.

Update Jan 21, 2009 :  I am pulling the 2.0L 16v and Tranny out of my 91 Passat.  Looking for any inforation regarding the best way to install that motor in this car.  I am not looking for the easiest, but the best way to utilize this motor.

More Pix's will soon follow.

I am going to start parting out my 91 Passat for parts to install on this car.

Updated Jan 29, 2009: The Passat has been pulled apart, the wiring is still in the car, and I am still trying to decide which way to build my fuel managment.  I am bouncing between sticking with the full Passat fuel managment, and running a Schirocco 16v Intake, Throttle Body, and CIS.  Any suggestions are welcome.  I am not considering MegaSquirt or any other aftermarket fuel injection.

Updated March 17, 2009:   Well the engine has been out for almost 4 weeks now.  I am currently held up with modifications to the Lower Control Arms.  I have a person thats willing to assist me in building new custom control arms for my needs.  Its my intention to run the Complete 92 Passat Brakes.  This means using the front Hubs, which dont fit on the small Cabby Ball Joints.  Also the measurement from the middle of the ball Joint to the back of the Hub Bearing is 1/2 inch more on the passat.  So to keep my factory stance, and be able to use the factory CV shafts.  I need Lower Control Arms that are 1/2 inch shorter.  Now I dont intend to keep the factory CV shaft, as they are weak when put behind the 2.0L 16v.  But if I break a modified set on the road, I can go an buy a factory one to get me home.  Then build a new one.  MORE TO COME.  :-)

Updated July 25, 2009:   Well, this car is sitting in the garage with NO Engine.  Sold the old engine and tranny and need to build mounts for the New setup I am giong to run.  Maybe I will be able to save some cash from next tax season to buy the Fabrication Tools needed to start building this car.  Mean while I will keep working on my Jeeps.

Update Sept 8, 2009:   After another search and advice from over Mk1 VW owners, I have located the large brake conversion from RPI Equiped.  Which means all the work on the lower control arms to install the Larger Passat hubs and disk brakes appears to be not needed.  There is a question if the factory suspension including ball joints will sustain the stress from the larger setup.

Futher more, I found a company called WRD that builds the Engine/Tranny Mounts for the 02A conversion.

Update Sept 14, 2009:   I have installed the factory suspesnion again in preperation of the parts I found during the Sept 8th update.  I may still widen the track later, but I want to be able to fabiricate it my self.  Until then, this setup will work.

Update Sept 16, 2009:    Well after a bit more work, the suspension is tighen up.  I now have the tires bolted on and touching the ground.  Without an Engine & Tranny installed, the front end sits high.

LOL, dont make the same mistake I did... Contact Induktion in Hanover MD. they are the ones who installed my motor. tell the Julian Sent you, They will try to talk you into getting 034, instead of Megasquirt, or CIS-e. Go either Megasquirt, or 034. It will cost you almost the same money, and you have a much better CPU that is a whole lot easier to tune, and get more HP out of. Talk with Justin, or Jim there and tell him you know Julian with the 16v cabby. They will give you alot of info for free. I so wish I went 034 like they told me too.

Ok, this is basically the way you wanna do it to avoid all the BS I went through, and still going through with this type of swap. It really depends on what you wanna do in the near futre. If you just want a nice running n/a car then carb it. The factory motronic stuff absolutely sucks! The money I have poured into this project would have been better suited for other things. If your going to turbo it, and build it for horsepower, then megasquirt is the way to go! It seems complicated, and expensive, but it really isn't. I will be very soon taking off all the CISE Motronic crap and installing megasquirt. I wish I had done that from the beginning. The money I have dumped in it to get it running almost right could have paid for 2-3 megasquirts, and it would have been running a whole lot better. megasquirt, or carbs is much easier to tune.

The 2L 16v 9A motor, is the best motor swap you can do with the cabby in my opinion. If your looking for speed (turbo), be sure to pick up a rocco intake, and move evrything to the drivers side. If you just want it to look good stay with the passat intake, but moving your fuel lines is a pain in the a$$. make sure you pic up a 80% kit, and a bolt kit for the trans before you put it back together, they are less than $100 and worth every penny with your new found HP. Look me up if you have any questions. I'd be more than happy to help.

LOL, don't worry. Cabbies are worth every penny! Looks good to me. I see alot of promise in this one...LOL. Just make sure if, and when you start to do work on her you keep her date spicific, and complete the job you start. Cabbies dont have to be super fast, and super cool! Just keep it clean, plain and simple. You'll be suprised how much less you can put in it to make it look oh so good! You got a good one!!!
