This is going to be used as a journal to the building of my Haynes Roadster based on the book "Build Your Own Sports Car On a Budget". The car that results is similar to a Locost(from a similar book), Caterham 7, and Lotus Super 7(the original)
~ June 4/08 To start I needed a flat surface so I used a sheet of 5/8" mdf with 5 2x4s running across it supported by 2 4x4s between the sawhorses.
Here I just started laying out the first few pieces.
And then with all the lower tubes in place waiting to be tacked in place.
~June 9/08 Here is the frame with the first few uprights in place.
I went out to take a look at a donor car which was a Datsun 210 B310 or something. It ran well and I think i can make it work so I bought it for a couple hundred dollars. (Hence why this page is listed under Datsun)
Here is how I made the front frame as you can see I used the table and one of the chassis tubes.
~June 11/08 Spent the morning moving the Datsun to my house and picking up more of the steel.
~June 12/08 Cut a few more pieces and spent the morning tack welding a few more things together.
~June 13-26/08 Worked on the rest of the frame including picking away at the rear end using the McSorley plans. This is going to be the most creative part of my build as the book calls for IRS I am hoping to use the Datsun axle but may need to find something wider. I also started working on the tunnel. Went to the junkyard in search of spindles they have some but they need to be removed from the vehicle.
~June 27/08 I finished the last structural piece of the frame from the book but on the advice of a Locost owner/builder I am going to add triangulations to the tunnel. Just need to pick up some more steel. I also have to get the rear round tubing bent as I don't want to attempt it myself.
~July 2 took the last few days off from the project to spend some time at a friends cabin while there my eye started to bug me and got worse and worse each day. When I got home I went straight to the clinic and they looked and said I had a corneal ulcer. They prescribed drops and it is way less painful and red today although it is still like looking through frosted glass. I went to the optometrists today and he thought it might just be an abrasion and dilated my eye for a couple days and told me to lubricate it as I slept. He told me I should be back wearing a contact in that eye next week!!!
Well since I'm taking a break from building I've been looking on the internet for other things I'm going to need to do and buy. I think I have decided on a color as well it s going to be black and lotus burnt orange the pattern is still to be determined.
~July 15 Well my eye is better and I am back to building. I've had the last two days off so I welded the frame fully. As you can see I still haven't welded in triangulations to the tunnel I may also put braces on the floor. Plus I think I will gusset a few of the joints. I also need to get the round tubular steel pieces of the frame made.

~Aug 25 I can't believe its been so long since I updated this page but I am always too lazy to upload new pictures. In the last month I modified the frame so that I can run the trailing arms this took a long time as there was a lot of cutting welding and grinding to bee done I also made the upright peices that the rod ends for the trailing arms are going to bolt into. In that time I also aquired an engine hoist and removed the engine from the Datsun, I then got help from my dad and we spent one morning giving it a wash it looks really good now! I also bought a set of Toyota Supra wheels with tires for 80 bucks, they only come in about 1/2" compared to the stock 12" wheels of the Datsun but I may need to look for a different axle because either way I go it looks like the axle is too narrow. A few days ago I went to a locost get together/BBQ which had about 7 people all who were currently building a car attend. It was great to talk to other builders and get ideas for my own build. Anyways here are pics which were taken over the last month and a bit.
