I originally bought this car in 1998 with 90,168 miles from a local Honda dealer in 100% stock form. It was a one owner trade-in and serviced regularly at the dealer. The car is a Canadian made VX model in Milano red and of course had the D15Z1 VTEC-E motor, 5 spd. manual tranny and factory A/C. Over the next few years I did very minor mods - Intake, Header, Exhaust, Lowering springs, etc. That never quite cut it and over the course of those years, I did a lot of research on performance and engine swaps. I purchased the full B18C1 motor swap from LKQ Mid America Imports in Topeka, KS for $3750 in April 2001. The swap came from a rear collision 1999 GSR sedan with only 13,284 original miles. This is not an "estimated" mileage as most JDM swaps are. I was given the complete dropout and gauge cluster from the car with the proper paperwork and a 6 month unconditional warranty. Considering the swap was not quite 2 years old when I bought it, you would expect the low mileage. I installed the swap in April 2001 when the car had exactly 137,419 miles.
Since I'm from WV and winter driving is part of life, a light car with more than adequate power = nothing but wheel spin and you go nowhere. So I bought a 1988 Civic beater to drive for the first winter and then a few more after that. These beaters became daily drivers and made the VX one of those Sunday afternoon cruisers. I've babied this car ever since I did the swap (and before) and after sinking too much time and money into it, like a fool I rarely drove it other than in the Spring and Summer months. Even then, it was always just locally to work and what not. It's always been garage kept, never smoked in and basically treated like a trailer queen. Ironically, it was only entered in 2 car shows ever.
In 2002 I installed a Jackson Racing supercharger with LHT intercooler and put just under 3,000 miles on the motor with that setup. I ran 1 local SCCA event and 1 dyno pull. It was never raced hard or abused in any way during that time. By mid 2003 the paint was getting pretty chipped up on the front end and very small rust spots on both sides of the rear quarters appeared. Considering that I was never partial to red to begin with, without question it was time for a makeover... The entire interior was stripped from the car, the rear quarter rust was removed and new metal welded in place - no cheap and ghetto filler here! The front hood "H" emblem holes, hood windshield squirter holes and antenna hole were shaved, again everything being welded in with new metal. Once all of that was completed, the hood and fenders were stripped to bare metal and the front bumper was sanded down to the bare black plastic. I did this to ensure that if the paint were to chip, you wouldn't see any red. All bare metal panels and areas were primed with an etching primer, then the entire car was topped with surface build primer. After that, it was all guide coated and wet sanded to remove any high and/or low spots. Next it was sealed with black sealer, then came the green base coat and then the clear coat. At this time, every inch of the car with the exception of the engine bay and the front and rear bumper supports were finished. Everything was prepped and painted with PPG products.
I wasn't too pleased with the previous supercharged setup. Rather than possibly sacrifice the near mint GSR motor, I built an LSVTEC longblock and turbo'd it instead. During this time the car had exactly 153,788 miles when I installed the LSVTEC turbo setup. It was amazing the power that the car made on such a small budget... Shortly after, I slowly lost interest in modding cars all together. I sold the LSVTEC along with all of the turbo parts and then had an empty engine bay that I finally painted. Of course this required removing everything under the hood - clutch and brakes lines, brackets, wiring, etc. The front and rear bumper supports were also painted and reinstalled. I reinstalled the original GSR swap and the car then had 159,045 miles and it has been the same way ever since. To date, it has never had an internal part replaced or swapped - all internals are factory Honda and untouched.
I've always had an O.C.D. problem and perfection is one of them when it comes to certain things. This car would be the good example of that. I can assure you that you will not be disappointed with this car. If you are, then you are worse than I am which is very bad. Everything and I do mean everything, down to every last bolt is done right - as close to what a factory GSR powered Civic would be if they were made that way. All of the wiring looks as if it were untouched, and for the most part it hasn't been.
With the exception of the seats and minor interior add-on pieces, all of the interior is stock to the chassis and as close to mint as you can get - it has the look and smell of a new car. The paint is shiny with almost no flaws and more importantly, no rust! It runs and drives very smooth - no CEL's, no smoking, leaks, grinds, or any other mechanical problems. I've religiously maintained the car with regular scheduled tune-ups it's entire life. Today as it stands, the car has 167,469 miles giving the drivetrain a mere 38,077 miles and a perfect 240 psi compression in all 4 cylinders.
