I had a 1992 black on black I sold to obtain the newer Ebony satin black generation 3 1996 Taurus SHO. Since I have obtained the car I have installed a new fuel pump and a fuel tank. 4 newer 225 50 16 series tires for a lower profile. 1999 rear Tail light all red conversion and 1999 front signal light conversion. Replaced the rear rotors and pads. Replaced the drivers seat. Painted all four calipers red. Restored the finish via clay bar and buffing, waxing and polishing. I feel the car looks very pleasing after detailing. I love the coke bottle style of the Taurus SHO, the high rear fender arches the ground effects the "Ford Oval" Designs throughout. The very comfortable wrap around buckets! The JBL sound system with the six CD changer mounted in the trunk with a holder attached to store 7 cd cases and one extra magazine. I give my ride a way up thumbs up! Just recently developed an engine tick so tore down the top side of the engine and discovered cam gear walking inherent to SHO engines. So have to weld all four cams and will post pictures after welding is done.

FORD Taurus SHO 1996-1999 CAM-WELD Repair

Unlike the SHO V6, the SHO V8's valve train was an interference design, one that is shared by many engines built today, meaning that the piston will collide with the valves if the camshaft or timing chain fails. Due to some cam sprocket failures, the engine acquired a reputation for potentially catastrophic failure.

Cam Troubles:

Soon after the introduction of the SHO V8, widespread problems with the cam sprocket began to surface. Ford had used a relatively unusual method, called "swedging", of affixing the cam sprockets to the camshafts. The cam sprocket were fastened to the hollow camshafts by forcing a metal ball which was slightly larger than the interior diameter of the camsahft through the center of the camshaft, thus expanding the metal slightly and creating a mechanical bond between the cam sprocket and the camshaft. This method proved to be inadequate, and thus on some engines, the cam sprocket could break loose from the camshaft and spin independently from the camshaft (walk). This would result in the camshaft stopping and thus not activating the valves, allowing the pistons to hit the valves, ruining the engine. The preventive measure of welding the cam sprocket to the camshaft soon proved to be a fix for engines that had not suffered such a fate.

The IMRC Was broken due to the secondaries stuck shut so had to clean the linkage and am looking for a working IMRC. After tear down the intakes were very gunked up. So started cleaning them.
CRC Brake cleaner proved the best for disassembled intake assemblies. See picture. I have learned that IMRC are unpredictable. You can't count on them working properly. So as a performance upgrade I have learned to zip tie the secondaries open. Now there will be no question as to whether the secondaries are open when you want the edge of performance!!! The car will be ready to breath!!

All four cams were welded tody 8/20/08
