Terry from Vorshlag here. Just putting this little page together for our "Alpha" E36 LS1 test car to hopefully get some votes for the 2008 Grassroots Magazine ULTIMATE TRACK CAR CHALLENGE. This SUB-2500 pound E36 BMW started life as a lowly 318is, but with the simple addition of an aluminum 5.7L LS1 engine and T56 6-spd, its now "a bit better". The motor is a stone stock Camaro junkyard find, as is the transmission. This car was the prototype for our popular E36 LS1 swap, but it has mostly pre-production pieces and is not a "high dollar" track car, not hardly!
Should this car be allowed to run in the UTCC? Sure! Its a street driven, street legal, emissions legal car that still makes enough grip to peel your face off and has enough power to be "fun to watch". It makes all the right sounds and sensations, and has even caused one rider to "let some pee out". Here's an in-car video from an autocross, which this car is used in predominantly. This car is also a test mule for new Vorshlag and AST suspension parts, and is currently outfitted with 18x10 D-Force LTW5 wheels, 285/30/18 R compounds, stock M3 brakes, AST4300 triple adjustable shocks with remotes, Vorshlag camber plates, and a couple of Sparco EVO seats - and little else. The interior is mostly gutted, and much of the car is still stock (including all of the OEM sheet metal and glass, sans the door glass). Before the event we have a few minor improvements in store (paint), but no crazy upgrades or big dollar motor waits in the wings. Speaking of wings, we're removing the rear unit shown on the car here - its anything but subtle.
Can a lowly autocross car with zero bling and a "cone puncher" driver keep pace with the big bad track beasts and hot shoe road racers? Vote for our car and we'll all see! Remember: Vorshlag is also a GRM supporter and advertiser (the only magazine ads we run nationally are in GRM), and there's several current GRM project cars sporting Vorshlag parts. Represent!
