This is a 1972 Chevy V8 Vega project car. My father picked it up in Antioch CA, when I returned from Iraq. His intention was to get three gerations working on a car. It would help build intrest in mechanics for my son, and get the family interating with eachother. Also it would help kill time while I was stationed near by. Before I jo ined the Army, my father and I built a 415 c.i. sbc. and put it in a 1979 camaro. Because of smog laws out here we needed something else. My father found a 1972 Vega that had a sbc 350, TH400, and a dana 60 with a 4 Link. He convinced me it would be somehting different and cool. We brought the car up to my place in Rancho Cordova, CA in 2005. The vision for the car has gone many different ways.

One of the first things we did was add the 8 point roll cage, and moved the battery to the back. I had some help from a guy named Chris, that's now stationed in Ft. Riley. I thought that I could do the welding myself, but I learned it takes a little more than I was capable of. Thanks for all the help Chris! Then put in some new adjustable shocks since the old ones were broken... suprised we never hit a bump and ther rear end collapsed into the car.

We re-wired the car, got an ignition box, and then added some new guages. We had to make a dash from wood to get those to fit in there.

We also added a bigger radiator, an aluminum double pass with two 10" electric fans. We had to add a tranny cooler because the radiator didn't have one. reconscout's 1972 Chevrolet Vega

We took the car to Sacr amento raceway. The street tires wouldn't stay hooked up for nothing. Went one run, and ran a 13 something. Ran it again but neither of us got a time slip? That run I threw the belt, and the car started getting HOT!!! and over heated. Put it on the car dolly and towed it home. I think I lifted the gas and decelerated too quick so it tossed the V belt. Upgraded to serpentine belt system next. I read some where it was a beter set up.

Took it to the track again. Ran another 13 something. This time I had the Hoiser quick time pro's in the rear. Stuck a little better. But it just didn't feel right. It had Low oil pressure, but we had the sbc 415 sitting around.. Ran another pass, and just about the same thing. When I went back to the trailer it was knocking.

Great job on your build. Sometimes they can be frustrating but you stayed with it, and look at what you have now. A 5+ star ride!

Reconscout, Thanks for the kudo's,I race the car around Cols.,Oh. Don't get discouraged when your project doesn't go just right it is all a learning experience,I have pictures of mine at the stage that yours is at now,it just takes time(and money....lots of money)and if you are dedicated to it,it will happen. You have a great start there and what you have done so far looks good.....remember the 13's are just a number on the way to the 12's or 11's One more thing,I would like to thank you for your service to our country, there is no more noble of an occupation, and those of us that live in this great country owe you a debt of gratitude
