This is the car that started it all...the early-80s water-cooled obsession, that is. This car started as a plain-jane 81 normally aspirated 924. I got it for cheap and have spent about 2x what I paid for the car to get it into its current condition. It is very reliable, very fun to drive, although it's probably the slowest of the bunch.
Here's what it looked like shortly after I acquired it in the Fall of 2004:
Since that time, I've rebuilt the entire top end, adding an Audi throttle body, which doesn't improve HP but definitely improves throttle response and the MPG (miles per grin) factor. Here's what the dressed up engine bay looks like now:
During that same period, I installed a killer sound system with a new Blaupunkt head unit, four speakers, plus a Bazooka powered sub:
The sub is installed on the rear seat fold-down, so it works either way, and can be concealed by the cargo cover (which I also repaired):
The interior has been restored...not to concours condition, but it looks better than most 81s I've seen. I added a 13" D-style Grant GT steering wheel, along with an A-pillar gauge pod with a vacuum gauge and volt meter:
I also added a 944 large-style rear spoiler to the hatch:
Here's the final results...note that the stock 8-spoke wheels were replaced with 15" spiderwebs shod with Yokohama All Season Ultra High Performance rubber; note also the new exhaust, roof mount radio antenna behind the sunroof and the small oval fog/driving lights:
