This car is a 1980 Porsche 924 Turbo. One of the previous owners had lightly tracked the car (no roll cage, no major engine or suspension mods) and had outfitted it with an "Ultra Wide Body" kit similar to those used in the early 80s on the IMSA / TA circuits. Interesting, the car was also fitted (poorly) with a large (9"x9"x18") intercooler behind the passenger side headlight, which is conventionally referred to as the Holbert location (Al Holbert of PA developed and raced IMSA 924s in the early 80s, and pioneered the side-mounted IC setup). The car also had fixed headlight conversion and hood pins provided by the PO. Here is how it looked when I went to pick it up in Covington IN:
The interior was surprisingly in pretty decent shape. Decent condition steering wheel, center console and excellent condition black vinyl seats (which were subsequently STOLEN from me by Mark Johnston a.k.a. my924gtc, mygroup4, hausbrauen, etc.):
The engine was strong, but it was running incredibly rich due to the crappy flexible hose that the PO had used to connect the IC to the charge tube. I barely made it home from Covington!
After the Memorial Day 2005 Water-Cooled Porsche Parade...
...the car underwent major surgery. Unforunately, it is still in pieces, primarily due to the nefarious actions of the aforementioned Mr. Johnston. In any event, I am working on a MONSTER build for this car. I have acquired all of the appropriate wide body fiberglass. Here are some of the details:
Custom pistons from Diamond Racing...
Stroker crank: welded and offset ground for an additional .25" stroke:
Hybrid KKK turbo: stock K26 hotside / K27 coldside:
Custom intake manifold to accommodate a front mount 951-style intercooler:
There are a lot more details over at 924board.org if you're interested in following the development of this car. I am hoping to have the engine completed in 2008, with body and suspension work scheduled for Fall-Winter, and hopefully back on the road in Spring 2009.
