PORSCHE 968 RACER

pmcrespo's 1995 Porsche 968

Seibon

 pmcrespo's 1995 Porsche 968

 NASA (www.NASAProRacing.com) racer.

No turbos, superchargers, or turbonators! Instead, simple effective 90s engineering throughout. Four cylinders, great platform, and lots of blood, sweat, and... Nnah... no tears here. The last of Porsche's four cylinder, water cooled, front engined German racers.

Long term, weekend worked, budget constrained effort. Slowly but surely getting there. Isn't that what Grassroots Racers are all about? Indeed a work in progress. But without a doubt; battle ready.

Save on tires now!

NASA POCONO SOUTH RACES

Saturday:
Beautiful weekend.  Had made it in with plenty of time on Friday and even was able to go out and have a drink (or maybe two) before the race weekend officially started on Saturday AM.  Car was running like never before.  With extra 20-25 ponies at hand and the nice HP and Torque curves as tuned by Paul Schwartz (Dougherty Automotive & Porsche Motorsports), the 968 felt very, very strong.  The new rear suspension also made a huge difference as the car now felt planted at all four corners and there was none of the old rear-end dancing under heavy breaking or initial turn-in.

pmcrespo's 1995 Porsche 968

I don;t know of any racer that likes Pocono South course.  It trully sucks.  Hairy turn into the infield as you exit the super banked NASCAR Turn 1 and dramatically bumpy and narrow pavement and joints thereafter.  Not a good place to sort out suspension and test setups.  But at least we are racing!

pmcrespo's 1995 Porsche 968

Haad great practice and qualifying sessions as I acquinted myself with the track layout.  Tons of odust, rocks, and fiberglass debris from many offs by many of us.  I put a few wheels off here and there but nothing dramatic outside a couple of drifter styly exits out of the hairpin in the infield.  Picked up speed as I progressed and lap times got into a decent area.  Qualified well.  2nd in class.

pmcrespo's 1995 Porsche 968

Started 8th or so on the outside lane.  Had a great start and picked up a few places.  Battled with a 944 SuperCup (different Class) driver that had qualified one spot ahead of me.  Outstanding driver.  Very fast and experienced.  He did kind of schooled me on racecraft.  Finally put enough pressure and squeezed inside for a pass.  Even though I was faster than him on the NASCAR course, I followed him around to settle in and get some laps in.  Traffic became a factor and he pulled ahead a bit after I had a (not to bad) off in the infield.  Came in 1st in Class, Top ten overall.

Car has been Aligned, Corner Balanced, and Dyno Tuned

Thank you to Paul Schwartz for a phenomenal tuning session.  He truly knows the bits and bytes going through the ECU to the rest of the ride and can really code some binary in a hurry to squeeze out them last few loose ponies...  Currently he works with several pro-racing teams inclusive of Koni Challenge and ALMS.

The 968 IS READY FOR SOME TUNING BABY!

Car is done and back together. I will update the detailed list of tweaks and upgrades but we now have:

Motor: New Head Gasket (compliments of Comp School and the UTCC), "massaged" head, re-profiled cams, lifters, refurbished injectors, heat shield-wrapped headers.

Suspension: Complete new rear suspension makeover inclusive of torsion bars delete, solid mounts throughout, bearings, and trick custom Bilsteins sporting some pretty sweet progressive springs.

And YES! A fresh new set of Hoosier R6s! The rears compliments of Hoosier Tire AWESOME Contingency Program. Won 2 tires from my rookie race weekend's 2 second place finishes!

So this week we will be tuning and custom "chipping" at the Dyno on Tuesday and headed to scales for corner balancing on Thursday.

Check back soon... I'll keep you posted....

VERENA MEI...
and yeah... the one dude...   what's his name.... uhm....  Billy Johnson".  LOL...  good guy....

I had forgotten to mention that at Buttonwillow Raceway Park at the 2008 UTCC I got to meet Verena Mei. She had her ex-drifting 350Z next to our garage. Let me tell you, Verena is super nice, sweet, and... well... She is HOT. Beautiful with this natural sexiness to her that is captivating and the most enchanting smile. Verena: If you are reading this... "Dinner and drinks at the Halekulani, HI?"

Verena Mei: Redline Time attack at Buttonwillow, CA

She was at the UTCC trying to sort out the suspension and setup on the ex-drifter ride to make it more competitive in road racing and time attack. She was getting faster by the second with the enlisted helped of regular Time Attack hot shoe Billy Johnson. I really enjoyed chatting with him for a while. Very nice guy. And judging from the few conversations, really knowledgeable across the board from car and suspension setup, to track lines and car dynamics. He definitely gets some credit for shaving a few tenths off my lap times at Buttonwillow after just a few quick tips.

He told me to check out this video of him... pretty funny... I am glad someone has a slower time attack record than me... LOL...

2008 2nd ANNUAL ULTIMATE TRACK CAR CHALLENGE
Buttonwillow Raceway Park, California

It was an awesome adventure in travel mode, and an even better weekend of practice, racing, and socializing at Buttonwillow Raceway Park in California. After traveling over 2,800 miles from Philadelphia, in what ended up being a very memorable and fun cross-country road trip, I made it to the 2008 Grassroots Motorsports Magazine, Hankook, NASA Ultimate Track Car Challenge.

pmcrespo's 1995 Porsche 968

We came in 3rd in class in the UTCC with a 2:02:7. Configuration 13 Clockwise. Challenging track to really lay down laps at 10-tenths. Unfortunatley, I did not show up with a set of sticker (new) racing tires. Only brought the used set with more sessions in them than I thought. So I practiced with the 16" small "training wheels" and tires (as I affectionately call them) to learn the track. By the time I ended the 2nd session on Sunday (the first official UTCC timed session), both my front 18" racing DOTs where cording and the failing head gasket we had been nursing since Saturday was taking about half a quart of water as well as robbing us about 10-15 rwhp (that I could feel). Not to mention the oily and gasoline smelling and looking water in the reservoir.

The car, two crew members (friends), and sattelite support team (LA and PA friends and tuners) executed superbly. Without all the help, contributions, sponsorship, and support from RSBarn, Pro Legacy Advisors, Bob (Flash) Larson, Ron, The Hana Group, and everyone else, I could have not had the succesful weekend I had. I can't say much for the driving as I humbly say there was perhaps a better time to be had as it was my first time at the facility and, well.... this is indeed my official Rookie year! In fact, I had never done a time trial until this weekend... how funny is that.... LOL.... "What do you mean there is no start..."

Apparently 2:02s are reasonably decent laps for 209 rwhp on a 2,530 pounds platform. The teams that came in 1st ('03 S2000)and 2nd (95 Civic w/K24 Swap) had high-end high-tech Japanese engines putting out at or well over 200 rwhp in platforms weighting as little as 2,000 pounds WITH driver. Both very nice, well built, race cars with simply outstanding drivers.

The good news is that our money lap lap was within .7 seconds of the 1st place in class. A fresh set of racing tires and a healthy head gasket could have likely gotten us there.... Kudos definitely to the super competitive 968 platform, Pete's (Rs Barn) work, and Flash's R&D. Who knows... even maybe with a little extra fast practice track time I could have made up the .7 as well...

The guys from Grassroots Motorsports Magazine really liked the car and our overall performance. Same with the representatives from Cardomain.com and a few others. All of them where awesome and it was great fun to hang with them all. Hopefully we will make the UTCC feature story in the magazine. It would be even more awesome if GRM (Grassroots Motorsports Magazine) also published an exclusive feature story on the car and our participation (including getting there and back to Philly) in a magazine issue later in the year :-) yeah yeah... I am dreaming...

All in all, simply an overall outstanding 2nd Annual UTCC at Buttonwillow. All my doubts about making the nearly 6,000 mile round trip were quickly erased the moment I arrived Buttonwillow on Thursday night before the event weekend where I was greeted with open arms by everyone offering nothing but support, tons of help, and much needed driving advice for this rookie’s first visit to the track.

I practiced Friday in open track day, and three HPDE4 type sessions with NASA on Saturday. Managed to destroy my 16"s due to a tie rod coming off the A-arm that I did not discover until mid-day Saturday. Had to scramble and ended up buying 2 R888s on track just so I could finish practice and save the 18"s as I realized that they were worse than I thought (as in like MUCH worse). The event on Sunday was simply first rate and the competition assembled was top notch. Very impressive collection of racers and machines. God knows this underdog from the East Coast perhaps was over his head! Nevertheless, everyone made us feel right at home. I could not help but be excited about the UTC Challenge, the magazine, CarDomain, the rest of the sponsors, and all supporters across the board. It was a truly rewarding experience in a fantastic track, with a NASA Southern California staff that is second to none (they can also mix insane amounts of high octane great tasting maragaritas with their gasoline powered blender in no time).

pmcrespo's 1995 Porsche 968

pmcrespo's 1995 Porsche 968

pmcrespo's 1995 Porsche 968

You know.... on Sunday, GRM and NASA made the first session a practice/"qualifying" session so I was forced to switch back to the 16"s (combo with R888s in front and DOT slicks on back - yeah... more crazy talk!) so I could save the 18"s for the timed sessions to follow. But this kind of backfired as I only managed a 2.05 on the mismatched "training wheels" which pooled me with the slower Group 2. So it was a little harder to get clean fast laps. I actually ended up setting my fastest "money" lap of the day on the first timed session (second run of the morning). From there, the tire grip quickly vanished (along wit the rubber), the track heated also loosing precious grip, and the head gasket kept getting worse by the minute. Always some drama drama.... LOL!!!

pmcrespo's 1995 Porsche 968

pmcrespo's 1995 Porsche 968

Nevertheless, I exceeded my personal expectation by having a strong finish with a car that came into Sunday with less power and more weight than the top competition in the class. Of course, my "mis-under-estimation" of coming in without a set of new race tires did not help (but that was my fault). The failed head gasket hurt as well. It was all very challenging and superbly exciting. As a rookie, and on my first ever "time attack" format, what better place to do it that Buttonwillow Raceway Park with everyone watching, taking pcs, and shooting video while running against some of the best competition in the nation. Does not get any better than that! I also understand that Buttonwillow is quickly becoming the "Time attack" spec track in the USA...

pmcrespo's 1995 Porsche 968

The feedback from everyone has been great, and the 968 received lots of attention from everyone; spectators, GRM Staff, CarDomain staff, crew members, and racers alike. I am truly looking forward to perhaps getting invited again next year (maybe East Coast?). I am also very much looking forward to the magazine's UTCC feature story and overall impressions from the editorial staff at GRM and CarDomain.

Let's do it again!

POCONO NORTH THUNDER RACE VIDEO - 2nd Rookie Race (
June 1st, 08)

Steve Kwiat, fellow GTS3 racer in a Boxster with a transplanted 996 motor took the following video.  We had some pretty good side-by-side runs.  The 968 kept getting this bad oversteer that eventually resulted in an off course excursion at Turn 2 on heavy braking.  Ended up being a right rear loosing air and finishing the race with like 20 pounds.  Also, I did not pu enough fuel in the car (in the name of weight savings!) and the car was sputtering off of Turn 4 (right hander).  That is where you see the S2000 pass me on the outside.

May 31 - June 1, 2008 - "MY FIRST RACE WEEKEND
SUCCESS! 2 races = TWO 2nd Place Finishes, 1 Little Trophy (you don't understand.... really little!), and some  DRAMA!

pmcrespo's 1995 Porsche 968

Finally put the car back together very late on Friday and showed up at Pocono Raceway. Showed up by myself on Friday night all excited but certainly... uhmm... ehhh.. well... nervous as I can be (not that usual with me)... Running NASA GTS3 with a not optimal power to weight at around 12.9 when I should be at around 11 to be in the competitive zone.

pmcrespo's 1995 Porsche 968

Saturday was rainy from the start. Of course, I had no rain tires and no wipers. Just my set of R6s on the 16"s and my R6s on my 18"s. For the practice session so I decided to go out on my 16s. By the second lap, someone had clipped the flag station into Turn 1 coming off the Nascar banked turn 3 (>100 mph). I came around to the hectic flagger with less hands than flags waving while jumping up and down slow enough to nicely skate my way through 300 yards with absolutely no control as I floated over the oily water to a 5 mph pace somehow managing to keep it on the asphalt. About 8 other cars that were not that lucky were scattered all over the place. By the time practice was over (never did red-flag it), there was oil and water all the way through the infield making it effectively undriveable over 40 mph.

pmcrespo's 1995 Porsche 968

By qualifying, the HPDE peeps had cleaned up somewhat of a dry line and the rain had pretty much subsided for the most part. In about the 6th lap or so I decided I had enough clean track ahead and a good dry line for my money lap. One rookie mistake later I found myself in the same spot where the previous wreck was, not looking far enough down the track, forgetting I was on my 16" "training wheels", and trying to slow down a bit from over 110. A little slide... a bit off the only line at the time on the track, and around I went. Unfortunately, my drifting skills are obviously not very polished and I could not save it. Kept it on the asphalt for the most part.... needless to say.. NOT the money lap. First true spin ever. Somehow I finished the session while unable to breath, blink, or speak, and qualified second.

pmcrespo's 1995 Porsche 968

Race time came quicker than I expected and by the time I looked at the schedule after throwing on the 18"s, I had about 10 minutes to get ready, strapped, and gridded. Between the nerves and excitement, during the warm-up lap I realized I had no idea where the green was going to be thrown. As I am looking for it up high on the banking wall, I happened to hear and see the leader open it up. Well, a 10 cars deficit later, here I am going back into my now least favorite Turn 1. Much contact in the front running group, lots of pieces flying, smoke, and cars sliding. I get through unscratched on the inside as I tried to slow down. Finished the race under a red flag after a top running racer went off at; guess where, Turn 1-2. Started breathing again, and then, proceeded to get scolded for a "questionable pass" under yellow.... I was forgiven as the 2 cars I passed, passed me back, and I had little chance of stopping as the incident unfolded in front of me with cars behind, off-line, and with little room... and not even halfway through the first lap! Somehow, I managed to take 2nd. Very, very, very small trophy..

Sunday was a beautiful day. Pete from RS Barn came up and joined me for the day. Practice was fine. Again qualified 2nd. Pete helped sort out a few suspension annoyances and all sorts of important racing things I had no clue to think about. I was a happy racer. Locked and loaded, obviously "a veteran by now" . As I pulled out Pete asked me for the 15th time if I had enough fuel. Again I said I was absolutely certain. remember, I am a veteran now. Had to keep the weight down. An extra 2 gallons would put me in the back of the pack for sure . Nailed the start this time. Passed a car or two into Turn 1-2 and I was setting on a rhythm. Midway through the race... coming through... you guessed it.... Turn 1 right kink and into right Turn 2 heavy breaking zone, I stand on the brakes as usual, on a decent line (I think), and.. oops... right rear locks up (never happened before - fronts always locks first), car kicks to the right (opposite to turn), try to correct, and around we go. This time a little quicker and more dramatic than my first drift practice. Actually going off for a picnic on the grass. Managed to keep the car on.. so I rolled back onto the track 2 cars in front of the 3rd and 4th GTS3 positions. "Great", I thought, I have some cushion... Well.... for the rest of the race, I did not have enough fuel to not sputter out of Turn 4... By the end of the race I had lost the 2 car cushion (both out of T4 while graciously sputtering), but managed to again, somehow, find 2nd place. "I told you I had enough GAS!!" Did find out that somehow the right rear was loosing air throughout the race as it was flat shortly after the race ended.

"HOUSTON, WE HAVE A PROBLEM

Stopped by RS BARN today to check on the progress installing the header, throttle body, custom chip, dual oil coolers, a few other nifty RS BARN custom "air management" pieces, and to drop off a few parts. Well.... I found my car waaaayyy up in the air on the lift half torn apart....!!!! (See pictures below - sorry for the bad quality - camera phone...).

But calm and collected as can be, Pete tells me they stumbled upon a problem that had gone unnoticed for a while. You see, in my last few laps at Comp School in April 15th, the car blew the main cooling hose. I though it was just that the clamp was stretched and that under heavy racing loads and runing a little hot, it has just "popped out" as the car had been running in under normal operating temps. Well... apparently some moments before the hose blew off, the Water Pump's impeller must have failed (read: REALLY free-spinning failed) and the temp quickly increased building enough pressure for the hose to blow. A great thing, as I immediately shut down teh car and no serious damage from overheating is apparent. So the hose may have saved me a head gasket or worse.

The good news is that Pete and Max at RS Barn have it under control (as always), and they swear up and down the new pump will be in place in no time and I will be back up and running. Custom RS Barn Header, new exhaust setup, custom RS Barn Chip, and Custom RS Barn throttle body are all in. Plus a few other goodies. And guess what! The wipers are all HOOKED_UP! Thanks Max... I was about to set them on fire after several hours of trying on Monday....

Dyno time scheduled for tomorrow.... Big day... We shall see..

ADIOS NASA GTS-2, ENTER GTS-3  :-(
Pete and Max at RS BARN have been busy helping me with the final preparations as we have decided to throw away any expectations of runnning NASA GTS-2 in exchange for showing up at the GRM Hankook UTCC at Buttonwillow Raceway Park on June 8th with a little more power and a bit less weight. This knocked me out of compliance on the 14.5 Weight to Power ratio limit for GTS-2 and, depending on final Dyno numbers, will dump me straight in the middle of the faster GTS-3 class with a ratio limit of 11.00.

This means that I would need to have about 245 rear wheel horsepower to be on the sweet spot and be competitive. Unfortunately that may not happen until cams and intake manifold work are put in place later in the summer. Soooo... I am definitely not excited at the notion of being 15% down in HP/weight in class to the top contenders.... Oh well... Good rookie training... right? Ahhh...... NOT!!!!!

GTS CHALLENGE & UTCC PREP WORK CONTINUES

Secured a MacDaddy borrowed aluminum race trailer with tire rack, tool box, and all sorts of great stuff. Thank you Jim Vazquez; your contribution to the UTCC trip will make the 5,500 miles much easier to tow. Lots of work on the car. Spent the entire Memorial Day weekend doing the little stuff that takes tons of time. I guess I am getting there.... can't seem to *&^%$%^& figure out the wipers wiring to the Aux Switch Panel though...

GTS CHALLENGE & UTCC PREP WORK

I will also be doing the NASA GTS Challenge races the weekend of May 31st & June 1st. Gotta do these as they count towards qualifying for the NASA Nationals in Septemeber at Mid-Ohio. I then will thereafter prep the car on Monday morning (June 2nd) and hit the road west to Buttonwillow. This weekend I did a lot of miscellaneous small stuff (read time consuming prep work) on the car. A friend (Andrew - intern at work) put up some stickers (not all are crooked) for the GTS races inclusive of the Hoosier contingency stickers just in case I miraculously come in 1st or 2nd in class. They will have to come off or be replaced by Hankook sticker for UTCC though. The car has also been aligned, corner balanced, and scaled. And headlight assemblies are also now out.

UTCC!!!!!!!  YESSSS!!!!
After about three weeks of 18 hour 7 days a week with work I come back to the awesome news that I got seleceted for UTCC!!!! I am shocked! But I am stoked! Excited as I can be. But certainly butterflyes quickly set in. And the reality and expenses of the 5,500 miles round trip trailering drive start opening my eyes wide open. Nevertheless, I am forging forward and plan to be in Buttonwillow on June 6th for Open Track practice and the 7th & 8th for the UTCC event together with the NASA HPDE and Saturday Enduro. The mother of any road trip I would have envisioned at this stage of my life. GREAT BALLS OF FIRE! Bring it!

April 15, 2008 - COMP SCHOOL  !!!!
Look Mom...  I am going to be a Race Car Driver!
I am now the proud owner of a NASA Competition License (inclusive of enormous glowing orange rookie "R" stickers). The 68 now also now has its nice Racing Log Book. Comp School rocked. The car kept me running up front (duking it out with a fast Cayman S.... had me on the straights)..., and never mind the full blown GT tube-frame, fiber body, crazeee fast machine....

So after a lost trailer lock key, rain, and many other annoying hiccups, I finally made it back up to Pocono to run the north course with the PCA peeps.

....Pete Fitzpatrick, owner & operator of RS Barn (www.RSBarn.com). 968/944 expert maximus, tuner, driving instructor, mentor, sponsor, & friend. Also thank you Max at RS Barn for your patience and hard work.

....Special thanks to 968Forums.com's (www.968Forums.com) co-owner Bob "Flash" Larson, & all the forum members for providing such a valuable site. Standing congrats to Jim Child, Eric Kraus, Charles Geer & all the exceptional 968 drivers winning races in 968s worldwide.

And most importantly, thank you viewer for taking the time to check my ride.
