04/17/13- Progress has been very slow in the last year. Unfortunately, I have been busy dealing with my mother being diagnosed with Breast Cancer. She has had 2 surgeries and starts radiation treatments next week. She is doing really well. I haven't done much with "Big John". Our new garage is not heated and the winter weather keeps hanging on. We have had few nice days and I had my neighbor come over and we tinker a little. The plan is to lift the body off of the frame and build a new frame. Then, there is a new plan to do some custom metal work to the front and rear of the car. It's just a matter of time and money. Mostly, time, lol. 03/29/12- Sorry, for the lack of updates. The last few months have been hectic due to preparing to move. My wife and I found a house we absolutely love. The best part is it has a garage where I can continue my work on "Big John". We just moved in last weekend so I will be moving "Big John" out of storage to the house within the next month. Then I'll be getting back to work on it. Check back soon to see progress.07/27/11 - Finally made time to work on "Big John", It's amazing how quickly time seems to go by. I've been on vacation for several days and had made all these plans for working on "Big John" and nothing seems to have gone the way I had planned. However, I did get a few things accomplished and unaccomplished. I managed to install the new Wood rimmed steering wheel. It was much easier than I thought it would be. I got the battery recharged and got the juices flowing just enough to get the oil pressure up. I didn't want to overdo it as I did also confirm one of my biggest concerns about the ignition setup in "Big John". Due to my findings, I will have to buy a completely new set of spark plugs for it because the ones listed as stock for this vehicle application are too HOT. I'll have to install plugs with a colder heat range to prevent damage to my pistons. I did also run into a problem with the headlights. I purchased a set of chrome eyelids for them. I got the first one installed no problem. Got the second one installed and realized it wasn't in properly. So, I was going to have to start over. As I was removing a screw from the retaining ring the tab broke off. Good thing I bought all of those rings from that salvage yard with the '73 Lincoln when I did because he scrapped everything. The bad part is they are buried in the trunk of "Big John" and I'll have to move some stuff out of storage before I can get access.04/30/11 - Went to the Jefferson Swap Meet today! Had a blast and found a brand new wood rim steering wheel for "Big John" and chrome eye lids for the headlights. Can't wait to install them.4/14/11 - Better weather finally coming! Should be able to get "Big John" out of storage soon and continue where I left off. Been on the phone a lot lately and found some possible donor cars. Hopefully everything works out the way I want, but we all know how that goes. Also playing with a few possible custom ideas for redesigning the rear bumper and valance areas. Maybe some mild custom metal work or might even be considering some custom fiberglass. Not sure yet which way I'll go with it.10/29/10 - Newest update! "Big John" IS running now! Last night, I went down to the shop with a friend and fired up "Big John" and moved it under it's own power. WHAT A FEELING! I'm finally starting to see daylight at the end of this very long tunnel that I've been going through for almost 3 years. I'll be moving the car to dry storage for the winter months tomorrow because the shop is being sold. I'll continue my work on "Big John" in the spring. LOOK for the updates to start again around the end of March or early April.08/22/10 - So, I was looking for a receipt and was looking in various places and realized "Damn, I have a lot of receipts". I am going to have to spend some time organizing them. There must be at least several hundred to maybe even a thousand dollars worth of receipts that I have found just since the last time I added them together.08/19/10 - Well, a lot has happened in the last year. I have been extremely busy wit a new job. This fact is unfortunately the cause of my lack of progress on "Big John". Things have not been working out the way I would like and so very little has been accomplished in the last year. All I have managed to do is remove the rear bumper which was a delicate procedure due to partial rotting of the frame behind the driver side rear wheel. I have wired up the electric choke and recharged my battery. I am now also looking for a donor car (may have found the perfect one too, if the finances work out) and a new place to store and work on both vehicles side by side.09/09/09 - WOW! I didn't realize how long it's been since I had updated last. A lot of progress has been made in June and July. I have been very busy with my new job and still working my old job on a part-time basis and of course, squeezing in as much time as possible to work on my ride. I am having internet issues and hope to be able to post pics soon of the progress I've made. Please keep checking back in on "Big John". The front end of the body is almost completed and the engine is almost ready to start once I solve a fuel delivery problem. I just thought I give that to you as a teaser.07/23/09 - I apologize to all who have been watching the progress of "Big John" so faithfully. I've been very busy lately and have not had an opportunity to update. However, things have really come together for "Big John" and it looks as though I may get a little fun time in it before the winter weather starts to make that impossible. Here is a brief rundown of the progress in the last month. I have finally got my brand new 3 row radiator, my original fuel tank has been cleaned and resealed, I have decided to reinstall the driver side fender for now until I get a replacement, The grille is complete, after breaking 3 headlight rings and locating and obtaining 4 more off of a '73 Lincoln Continental, the headlights are finally in place, both hood hinges are now refinished and installed and many parts have been purchased in the last few days. I have already recieved my new fuel tank straps and the rest of the parts ordered will be here within the next week. I did also finally find and purchase my rear brake hose. I estimate that I've probably added another $1,500.00 to the total expenses for making Big John roadworthy again. That brings the total to approximately $7,400.00 so far and I still have a long way to go before Big John is completely done with paint and such. I will follow up in a few days or so with some more new pics to share with everybody. As usual, I would like to thank everyone for their continued support, curiosity and encouragement.06/21/09 - Father's Day and nothing seems more fitting than to add these updates of "Big John" (a tribute to my father). It really seems to be coming together and taking shape. It's a slow process, but I enjoy it and looking forward to that first drive when it's done. Below are the newest pics. Enjoy!
