First Track Event: Summit Point Main Course
Took the car to Summit Point this past weekend with Car Guys Inc. for a high performance drivers education event (HPDE). First track event in the Corolla, and the weekend was just full of problems.
To start, I drove the car to Summit Point, WV to the event as I was traveling with two friends who were trailering their cars. Got about 3/4 of the way there and blew an oil line...oil sprayed all over the engine compartment and caught the exhaust manifold on fire. According to the guys traveling with me a huge fireball came out from under the car. Anyways I pulled over and we managed to put the fire out with 2 bottles of water and a half full bottle of NOS energy drink. We trailered the car the rest of the way to the event. Fire burned a few wires under the car and on the firewall, and melted the side of the distributor cap...nothing too bad. I was able to replace the oil line, shave the inside of the distributor cap out and tape up the wires so I could run the car on the track. Yes, the car came close to burning up, luckily it didnt..lesson learned. Will be carrying at least one fire extinguisher at all times now and will be redoing all oil lines before the next event as they were done by the person I bought the car from.
Saturday morning the track was wet, and I managed to spin the car once on the first run out :ops: Did fairly well after that, just had to stay out of boost in the turns.
Sunday, finally got to do some dry runs on the track. First run out, I find out the car is lacking in brakes. Will be upgrading to Hawk HP or Blues soon. Managed to cook the brakes in 3 laps, so ended up only doing about 8 laps per session and taking it easy in brake zones...not fun. 3rd session of the day the car blows an intercooler pipe off. I pull in and fix this to find out the car will not idle. I believe this is some sort of wiring issue from the fire and myself and my buddy Johnnie (Blaze86vic on the forum) spent yesterday afternoon sorting wires and cleaning oil out of everything (Thanks again for the help man).
Car gave me hell all weekend, but I have to admit when it was running it was fun. Car's fast, and with brakes I might even be able to hang with Johnnie's 73 Celica, which by the way was damn fast. That man can drive!
Update** Got the wiring issue fixed car is running great.
