Here's my 1953 GMC 3 ton manure truck. This one is a real keeper. Formerly a firetruck at American Cynamid in Bound Brook, NJ, this Bean Company foam truck lived in a heated garage for 40 years traveling less than 20 miles a year. It was driven around the property monthly and the foam unit operated, and, used for training the employee fire fighters in how to manage chemical fires before they had professional firefighters and before they had HazMat teams.
The original fire apparatus on the back end of this truck was removed and a grain/dump body from another GMC was mounted in its place. It was owned by a nursery in New Providence, NJ for a few years. They bought it at auction from American Cyanamid when the plant closed up and had a neighbor do the conversion work. His work was first rate and having a 50 year old truck with only 3,400 original miles on it allowed him to focus on the conversion and not much in the way of needed body or mechanical work.
Sporting a Clark 5 speed transmission coupled to a 2 speed rear axle, this truck will pull a bull dozer out of mud bog if it has to. The gearing is low enough that you can literally crawl faster than it drives in 1st gear low range.
I'm proud to own this truck and I've done a lot to continue the upgrades and improvements including a paint job in 2005.
Here it is with the stable signs on the doors.
I use this truck every week and it runs like a top! Whether I'm dumping horse manure or hauling stone and rock, it loves to work and is very reliable. I take good care of it too so I treat it the way it treats me!
