Reworking a car to make it that something special

- how you want it-

rchayes's 1971 Buick Riviera -what a concept-
I'v Been working on the Red Riv for a while now in my Garage, Thought of getting her media blasted but that just didnt workout, I decided to strip her the old school way elbow grease and sand paper, well winter came and its just to cold to work in my little garage.
So off to a friends Bodyshop for stripping, bodywork and paint she goes

You can see how she looked and the work already done - disassembled - jambs and stuff done- engine bay and front chassis painted before this at The Red Rivs other pages plus theres also lots of info about Boattails and some cruisin show pics

Down the road we go hopefully last the redriv see's snow

Back inside its warm and the work starts, time to see whats hidding under that cracking paint.

Heres a video slide show of the stripping (lots more pictures without captions in these)

Even got Lowrider to stop singing and Dancing long enough to help

Watch the video to see where his name comes from

Out with the old and not right in with the new straight and shinny metal

Then lots of metal banging to straighten out warping that what was done with the braizing torch way back when believe me this made for some sore muscles and stiff necks

Of course to get really nice and smooth you have to fill a bit and sand alot

Then primer and sand find the faults and prime and sand some more, again and again until its perfect

Paint prep

Finally the day comes when some fresh paint goes on, all that sanding is worth the work when you see some shinny paint going on

Of course after all this theres overspray all over the place, which means sand it all one more time, then work a dog (sorry Lowrider) to get rid of the sanding dust before going back into the paint bay

Where you clean it some more, then tack and tack and tack (5 times in all) to hopefully get it spotless

after three hours of cleaning and tacking your ready to spray on some of this

good old magic mirror finish poly just like the factory used.
First a couple coat of grey (thats what was on her from the factory and recommended BASF to seal things up even up the colour give the metal flake something to float on and reflect off

Finally four coats of the really expensive, really toxic stuff

This slide show is kind of long so be patient let it load you'll get watch the paint fly and see lots close ups of the results.

Last part of the recipe -let cure overnight and get Lowrider to untape

rchayes's 1971 Buick Riviera Done for now, she stays put until the roads are clean enough then cures until spring when I'll the cleanup and paint rest of underside, buff her out, paint pin stripe back, and put her back together with all the stuff I'm polishing up on these dog days of winter (sorry again Lowrider).
