my 6x9s stick out far enough cover wont go over them, depth is fine, its just to wide.

Getting back to answering your question, my explorer doesn't ever feel like it's tipping over (I know how to properly brake-by the way have you upgraded yours?) My wheels have wheels spacers/adaptors and I know the rear wheels stick our more than 2 inches outside the wheel well. Combine that with 12 inch wide tires equalls plenty of traction.

Another 1992 Sport with 22's awesome, I just went another route by lifting and installing bigger tires. Cheack me out but good work man!!!!!
