This is my 1982 Caprice Classic Wagon with a 305 and 700R4 with shift kit. I bought it with about 72K miles on it in excellent condition.
First things to go were the original radiator, water pump, plugs, wires, fan clutch, and miscellaneous maintenance items. A high flow iron water pump went in, along with a 4-core radiator which replaced the 3-core stock unit. Also a transmission oil cooler for when I tow my motorcycle trailer. Next, a good friend of mine wired up water temp, oil pressure, and transmission oil temp guages to monitor things while towing and also a trailer brake controller. He welded up a custom hidden hitch receiver behind the license plate for a clean look and good ground clearance.
at around 110K miles the original transmission went out (planetary gear failure we are guessing). Replacement was by Jasper Engines' remanufactured original replacement with shift kit added. Now it shifts hard and strong; I love it!
Now I have about 120K on it and looking to finally get some good lookin wheels and pro-sized tires on there...
I'll post more pics soon.
FINALLY got my wheels ;]
American Racing Torque Thrust II's. And in case anyone's wondering what size they are so you can figure on fitment for your caprice... They are 17X8 with 4" Backspace and 5X5 bolt pattern.
I wrapped the polished aluminum wheels in Nitto 450 255/50/17 tires and I am very impressed with the tires so far. I've only put about 150 miles on them, but they drive nicely and grip like a son-of-a-bitch compared to the Dunlop Qualifiers I had on there before. (granted the qualifiers were a 235/70/15 so the size does play a small part). I'm a afraid these tires will not last very long though. They are very soft and sticky, but it's worth it to have the tire i want.
PLEASE, let me know what you think of the car as it is and what you might do to it.
