I bought this car in May of 2007 with 180,000 for only $1900. It had sat in a garage for a while, and the drivers side window motor needed replaced. So did the starter. The TBI 305 ran well, but I was very disappointed in the performance.
The first performance mod I did was one of the cheapo Edelbrock triangle air cleaners. Wow, best $20 I ever spent on the TBI engine. I could feel a noticeable difference, and it sounded a lot better under a load.
Bigger tires, a nine bolt posi rear end, now we were having fun. The 305 still wasnt doing it for me though. In November my grandfather, who works at Lakewood transmission, told me that a customer had bought a new transmission for his 83 and not paid for it. Supposedly it was a 383. A few days later I was in the shop trying to get the car in my backyard for parts.
Jim (The big man in charge) said that wasnt possible. He told me that I could take anything off the engine I wanted for $300. I looked at the car and said I wanted the entire engine, the exhaust, and the wheels. $600 later I had two days to take anything I could fit into the pickup. Believe me, I took EVERYTHING I could.
In late January I had the engine in my car, and the car road worthy. Fastest car I have ever seen with under $4000 invested.
