This is a beautiful example of Citroën's Maserati-engine supercar (the SM) from 1973.
I include below a complete history of the car's re-birthing by Citroën SM Australia. Thanks go to Peter MacLeod - Master SM restorer!
Citroën SM Maserati
5SP, 3.0L, 1973 Chassis 00SD1405
Chassis No. SB00SD1405 is one of the last SMs to enter the US in July `73. Sold new by the Tempe Motor Co. in Tempe Arizona it spent its life in the `Desert State` travelling only 68000mls in 31yrs, before coming to Australia in 2004. Always well serviced and garaged the interior is in mint original condition (helped by heavy black window tinting) and only the original Brown paint needs attention.
We will take the opportunity to refresh the appearance of the car by a colour change to the classy `Kashmir` beige, a warmer version of the SM colour Biege Metallise, we will create Euro `smooth sides` and remove the effective but ugly black window tinting.
The engine and mechanicals are in very good condition, and being another rare 3.0L 5sp. the performance is really strong, but a timing chain update, carby, electrical, suspension, hydraulic and cooling system overhauls and our other standard servicing adjustments and modifications will ensure trouble free running for many more thousands of miles once everything is reassembled.
Without doubt the desert life in Arizona for 30 years and plenty of TLC helped to make this one of the best SM bodies I have seen, perfectly straight and rust free. Despite appearances however the paint was cracked and blistered . With only 65 K miles, sound mechanicals, a mint original interior and a good history the car deserved better.
Partially stripped and waiting for the panel beaters to remove the US side light and molding holes to give it the softer Euro `smooth side` look. Not a sign of any body faults or previous body work.
(left) All US No. plate holes will be welded and the rear panel smoothed out to allow the option of a Euro Style rear No. plate light and long Euro No. plate. I don't look forward to the job of removing the old sticky flaky tinting from the inside of that rear window!!
(right) With three layers of old paint stripped off the truth was revealed, a completly original factory primer/undercoat, totally unmarked with any previous repairs. What a find!!
(left) With the exception of our fresh removal of the side lights and the side molding clips it was all perfect.
(right) With the removal of all the paint right back to the original factory primer, even the doors, often an area of concern for rust or damage are as untarnished as the rest of this exceptional SM.
The side light `filler plates` are welded in place in the background.
(left) Only one small previous repair on the whole car. Those original panels are just beautiful to the expert and with quality painting will ensure a first class and long lasting finish.
(right) All the panels , doors, fenders, rear hatch, spats etc. were in the same incrediable condition. This car is proving to be something special.
(left) Totally stripped and requiring no repairs the panels are ready for primer. The aluminium Bonnet (Hood), stripped raw , will receive special preparation for painting.
(right) In primer and view coat, waiting for the final rubdown before painting. A quality preparation makes for a professional finish.
(left) A new colour, (Kashmir beige) for a new life in Australia. The car returns to the SM workshop awaiting reassembly when the engine and other components are complete.
(right) Fully reassembled and ready for testing and refining.
(left) Perfect panels and paint with an original interior.
(right) Beautiful Tabac leather, new door seals and seat belts.
(left) The Euro look smooth sides and rear No. plate light look right at home.
(right) All original interior having been protected from the Arizona sun by that dark tint and plenty of TLC over the years by loving owners.
