I decided that a custom exhaust was needed for this so the car was loaded up on roller tires and taken to a local shop that said dual exhaust was no problem and quoted me 125.00, i said cool do it! I wanted duals all the way to the back with 2 SuperTrapp mufflers. After 5.5 hours and alot of bent tubing on the floor i had a really nice system. However i was told not to expect that cheap of a price again!!
Having gotten the car home it wasn't long before it got its first chance to rattle the windows in the neighborhood (no mufflers on yet).
I had already bought the rims and tires so some short hops down the street were in order. This brought to light all the little things that needed done before it was street legal. Most of the stuff that popped up was kinda simple to fix but some required time and money.
First thing that needed replaced was the brake proportioning valve. With the new bigger brakes i needed more pressure to the back brakes to keep the car from nose diving. An adjustable valve cured this. Next was cooling, i tossed the brass radiator and called the guys at Griffin with measurements and they sent me a NASCAR modified radiator which fit with some sheetmetl mods. With this in i tried several fan configs. and ended up with a heavy duty stainless finger chopper, and no electric fan at all! The car did ok on warm days but anything over 85 deg. was not good. Originally i put a 1000 over stock converter in the trans, this made the car want to chug at stop lights forcing me to dump it in neutral. I replaced it with a 3500 rpm stall and fixed the idle creep. All was well till i hit a 6000rpm shift into 2nd gear....this caused a problem with the drive shaft(read twisted badly)splines and u-joints. 400 dollar later with a new shaft installed i repeated the process and promptly broke the trans! The car sat.And sat.
Till one day a good friend had the misfortune to barrel roll and total his 97 Z-28 SS camaro. I told him i wanted the 6-speed out of it if he wanted to sell. The trans was damaged in the wreck, punching a 8" hole in the center case and shearing the shifter flush with the case. All this was fixed and 8 months of mods were required to adapt the new trans to the car. Since i have to wait for a warm day to get more pics of the trans install, i'll give ya a quick list of the required mods i made.
