I have been contemplating a few modifications to my latest GS(#3) and the first I will do is to install a rear disc brake setup that was removed from a 1986 Pontiac 6000 STE.I got the calipers, backing plates as well as metal lines, hoses and E brake cables for $37 bucks at a U pull it yard. And also picked up both sides of a 2 door complete 1/4's for $75 bucks for my other GS as you can see them in my truck.

Got some nice aluminum calipers in great working condition..
The necessary metal lines, nice rear hoses, shock brackets...

And the hard to get backing plates. This setup should take about 1-2 hours to complete for a novice, less for someone who works on cars alot.Almost all new parts are available over the counter except the backing plates. The calipers have a hefty core charge,so even if you get bad ones off the donor car, take them and save you some money.I will be orderind new rotors and brake pads to install for safety's sake.
The rear disc brake install went rather easy as I removed the setup and had great directions from a fello A body owner who outlined the removal and install on his Celebrity on this site. Complete directions are on this page.

First step I removed the wheels and securely blocked the rear of the car. I used blocks of wood and cement blocks. I'd suggest using jackstands if available instead as I was chewed out by friends for using blocks.Always secure the vehicle and use proper tools...Here is what the drum setup looks like from the beginning.

After removing the drum,I cleaned the dust from the drum brake setup so I wouldn't breathe the dust. It can be very dangerous to inhale,so using a cheap respirator and brake clean helped alot.
After reading the complete directions from the link above,it too about 1 hour 15 minutes to have both sides bolted in place. After a thorough brake bleeding,a good pedal was attained. Here is what it should look like when installed.

Finally after the installation,I put the stock wheels on and made sure there was no rubbing issues. All went smoothly and the updated brakes are an improvement.Too bad they can't be seen behind the stock wheels. Now I have 1 car done and need a second set for my 2nd GS car. I'd like thank MickstanVR for the great article and for figuring out all the specifics on the swap.
