This is my 72 02' that i got last spring. it's body is incredibly clean/straight, and although it's not the greatest, it's going to provide an extremely nice platform for new paint...eventually.... Rust on this car is almost non existent and is relegated only to the surface.
We intend to make this an aggressive street car while keeping with the period stock look except for some new rims when the time comes.
Since we've bought the car last spring we've done the following.
Completely rebuilt the front suspension with new tie rods, balljoints, upgraded urethane bushings, upper strut bearings, new guibo joint for the steering collumn, change steering box fluid, new bilstein hd shocks all round, and ireland fixed camber plates.
replaced the crap one-piece exhaust that had been welded together under the car with step headers, and an ansa freeflow exhaust.
Replaced the fully restored stock seats with fully restored recaro 320i seats.
320i radiator
had to replace the cylinder head when i cracked it. Beause the replacement head has been skimmed so much we're actually running higher compression now =)
Ireland reground 292 cam
New Weber 38/38 downdraft which will be replaced with dual dellorto 40 DHLAS on a korman manifold come summertime when i'm back from uni in the uk
This christmas break she is getting the ireland engineering fron big brake kit with vented rotars in preparation for the sidedrafts. new sway bars to get rid of some of that body roll. and she's getting a front strut bar to help keep her in one piece.
after the round of winter work the next upgrades are a 5 speed to replace my whinneyy tranny, and an lsd from a 320.
I've been debating how to get as much horsepower as i can without bastardizing the car tooooo much. I'm not fond of swapping in a different engine, or butchering the engine compartment for a turbo. I feel the right way to do this car is to keep the motor that was designed for it while turning it into something a little bit above average. When you start transplanting motors from different cars i don't see that car as "that" car anymore if that makes sense. I want my 02 to be a fast 02,not a fast 02 with a vtec or what not. So, in the next couple of years i plan to buy another m10 to completely rebuild it. I'd like to stroke it with an s14 crank, lightweight rods, lightweight pistons, oversize valves, double valve springs, stronger rocker arms, skimmed head, 304 cam, dual 45s, and an aluminum flywheel (which might come this summer depended how i'm feeling and how heavy my wallet is)
so this is what this 72 is and where i plan to taker her.
