Demello Offroad's masterpiece. $130K and two years invested.
Highlights include Donahoe Baja FJ race glass body, BMW topaz blue paint; 0-60 in 5.16, and dyno at 420 crank hp. Demello custom full cage; Demello custom prerunner bumper and skids; Total Chaos long travel; Currie Ford 9" axle; 4.56 regear; Fox triple bypass fronts and Icon rear shocks and jounce shocks; King and Donahoe springs; race fiberglass; BS Sand seats with Crow 5-points; Motion tablet computer with Google Earth tracking; Lucrum LLS automated light system and much more in the following pics.
Interior
One of very few fully race-caged vehicles with a complete factory interior. The Demello DOM cage is body-gusseted and dimple-died front to back with the factory interior custom fit around it. The cage allows solid, safe mounting of the dozens of comfort and safety accessories required to complete the ultimate offroad vehicle. Cage tubes are directly welded onto the frame rails for better longitudinal strength.
Headliner is uplholstered Second Skin Overkill sound deadening neoprene. The interior is completely covered with Second Skin Damplifier Pro on the ceiling, floor and sides for the quietest fully-caged ride ever.
For additional safety offroad, all airbags are removed to prevent accidental deployment. The airbag harnesses and control box remain in place. The interior tubes are fully padded and upholstered light gray to match the factory interior.
Seating was designed to give 4 people safety and comfort for many long miles of offroad touring. The full suspension BS Sand seats were custom made with extra-deep shells and padding. You stay safely in place in rough terrain; you won't slide around, making a huge difference in fatigue at the end of the day. Since the seats have their own suspension, you still feel great even after many miles. Custom seat rails allow fore and aft sliding adjustment. Crow 4-point harnesses with shoulder pads are race-mounted to the cage tubes.
The rear seats have matching boosters for kids (Not pictured here). The rear harness straps are 2" wide and 2.5" in front. Between the rear seats is an aluminum shelf and 110v inverter for video games, cooler, etc. We have a Nintendo Wii in the location and it fits perfectly.
To the left of the Sparco wheel is a ScanGauge 2 ECU monitor and an Innovate XD-16 air-fuel ratio gauge above the wheel. A 14-inch TV for the rear seat passengers is mounted on a removable tripod (Not pictured here). Twin 110v inverters front and rear. Mounted above the windshield are a Galaxy CB and frequency counter, and Valentine One Radar detector.
Computer / Navigation
On the right of the dash is a Motion Computing 16" tablet running Google Earth. Internet is via a Digital Cellular relay repeater and ceiling-mounted Garmin GPS.
The computer is really nice to have way out in the sticks to see where to go and what's around. It uses Earthbridge and Garmin software to allow Google Earth to be used for trail navigation. This lets me draw or load somebody else's trail from another trip, and then follow it out on the road. It's a terrific way to just go wherever you want to go and have all the information you need about where you are. Signal boosting is accomplished with a roof-mounted antenna bridge mounting the booster antennas for cellular, Sirius and GPS. The system gets two bars even at Death Valley; thirty miles away from the nearest transmitter.
Also on the computer are the engine diagnostic software for tweaking ECU settings. These are the URD Mass Air Flow Simulation and Split Second AFR calibration software.
To get GPS and cellular data to the computer, an aluminum antenna bridge mounts all the several antennae without having to drill several holes into the roof.
1. Lucrum LLS Light system (more on that below)
2. Firestik FM antenna
3. Sirius/XM high power dome antenna
4. Firestick CB/SSB antenna
5. Garmin long range dome GPS antenna
6. Eclipse GPS antenna for Eclipse navigator
7. Wilson Cellular boosted antenna
8. Lightweight antenna bridge side - angled to protect mounts from branches, etc.
Lucrum LLS Lights
The first production Lucrum automated offroad lights are securely mounted through the roof and directly into the ceiling cage tubes. The joystick lets you aim them up, down and sideways and they are really great to use. When retracted they are street legal without having to put covers on. The front bumper mounts 4 6" IPF 100W Halogen floods. Here's a video with the lights in use on the Uber FJ:
Engine
I've beat a Boxster and a Cayenne in this car. Under the fiberglass hood is the URD 1GR supercharger and Rotrex blower. Builders estimate 420 crank HP. Boost pressure is safely increased with the 33mm pulley. Software includes Split Second Mass Airflow Calibrator and URD Sensor Simulator. URD Seventh Injector kit maintains accurate, reliable fuel delivery. With the battery moved to the back for better weight distribution, the space allowed for the 12v accessory electrical shelf (below) and space for the ARB air compressor. The aluminum URD intercooler is mounted invisibly in front of the radiator.
The custom exhaust is state of the art with Doug Thorley ceramic longtube headers emptying into URD Y-pipe adding horsepower and additional ground clearance. A URD custom straight 3" pipes leads to a Magnaflow low-bypass race muffler.
Transmission
To handle the high output Import Performance Transmission installed their high performance valve body mod that combines faster torque converter shifts with higher plate pressure to avoid slippage.
Electrical
An accessory 12V area in the engine bay (above at right) provides 300 amp protection with all Blue Sea hardware and oversized leads. Switched and unswitched fuse blocks allow easy access to electrical accessory power.
Driveline
In early 2008 Currie Enterprises' head designer Dave Castillo designed a custom race 35-spline Ford 9" axle for this truck. The Track-9 NASCAR unit is four inches wider than stock for better stability. Custom CNC hubs, Precision Gear 4.56 gears and massive hardened axles create an indestructable race rear end. A custom Reel Driveline race driveshaft with double carden smoothly handles the higher stress and travel. ARB air locker replaces the factory E-locker. Factory ATRAC is retained in front.
Front Suspension
The front suspension of the uber FJ allows it to travel at almost double the speed of stock FJs on offroad open stretches. The added ground clearance and increased width of the front and rear track keep it much more stable and secure than other FJ's.
The design spec called for state of the art design with 13" of travel. The Total Chaos 3.5" wide Long Travel was used with their 4340 Chromoly extended axles to retain 4WD. The upper and lower uniball keeps control tight while the compliance allows very high offroad speed with the ability to absorb massive hits.
Shocks are Fox 2.5" triple bypass remote reservoir. Velocity valving is tuned perfectly and delivers an ultra-smooth ride. They are mounted on a Total Chaos hoop. King coil springs allow flat and stable cornering. Fox airbumps in front and Donahoe Jounce Shocks in the rear keep the truck close to the ground, improving control by keeping the suspension from rebounding from large impacts.
A front ARB air locker makes the Uber FJ just about unstoppable in deep stuff. For added strength, Total Chaos spindle gussets beef up the stock Toyota spindles. Brakes are 388mm StopTech ST40 slotted with Aerorotor vanes. Hawk ceramic pads front and rear.
Stereo
Designed for high performance yet completely out of the way. Crossovers and amps are mounted up in the rear ceiling. 1000 watts with two Alpine 4-150 PDX's and MB Quart separates. In the front are 3-way MB Quart Reference in the front doors. Again, all doors and interior spaces are completely sealed in Second Skin Damplifier Pro.
In the back 2 JLA W3-10's are over the rear fenders behind the seats in custom enclosures. MB Quart 2-way separates are hidden in the stock locations in the C pillars. The front end is an Eclipse AVN-50 using all Monster cable on both low and high-level. All wiring is run along the ceiling to keep it out of harm's way.
In the back an aluminum racing jack and extinguisher are mounted with Fourtreks aluminum mounts. A 20lb. Powertank bottle is secured on a welded mount. The Odyssey 2300 battery is just behind the rear seats. On the rear door a Springtail MPAC storage system holds the First Aid kit and tools. A Pains Wessex EPIRB beacon sends distress signals on air and land search frequencies.
What's the amber light? That's a "dust light" helping vehicles behind you to see you despite the massive cloud of dust.
Attention
You'll get way more attention than you bargained for. Almost every time you get out, someone is waiting to give their compliments and ask for a look inside. And I really mean just about every time you get out of the car. You will have great conversations with outdoors people as well as car people and make many new acquaintances.
Above is the FJ's public debut in the Toyota booth at the 2007 Pomona Offroad Expo. Of the hundreds of incredible vehicles there, this was one that you had to push your way to get close to.
Condition
The Uber FJ is no trailer queen and was built for heavy use. Cosmetically, there are the usual paint scratches on the 10 month-old paintwork. There is no damage. The paint scratches are the usual light "pinstripes" all offroaders experience. Hopefully you'll add a lot more! All systems have been thoroughly tested offroad and never abused. It will deliver many miles of reliable, safe enjoyment to the new owner. It has been used for family offroad trips and is a reliable daily driver.
Mechanically, the front differential, CV joints and oil pan were rebuilt or replaced and inspected with 6K miles since. Cage tubes were directly welded onto the frame for better longitudinal strength. Front apron is realigned in accordance with the Toyota FSB. Front bodywork is all new Donahoe fiberglass including hood and fenders.
Why am I selling it?
Wish I didn't have to. It makes a great daily driver and is a blast to drive around town as well. I am starting a new business and have two kids in private school. I have to cut back on luxuries for awhile. Though this vehicle is the last thing I would ever want to sell, the new business has to take precedence unfortunately.
