  Page 9: RUST

A common Toyota problem, rust in the bed right above the frame. 8/07

More truck bed rust. 8/07

Bed is now patched and sprayed with something similar to Line-X. Its not Rhino Liner or Hercualiner either. The bed rails were sprayed too. 1/08

Just another view of the bed. 1/08

I had to have the bed corners sprayed because the truck started to rust not even a month after I got the truck back. Its always been a Toyota problem. 1/08

Spay in liner is only 1/16 in thick. Very shitty stuff.

I can literally pick it off with my finger nails.

Bed was patched in Oct 07 after accident.

There was a couple or areas where the bed was patched. Looks like crap after 7 months later

I just noticed this on 9-11-08. After I attempted to pop the dent out of my truck, I did a thorough look around at the frame when I came across this. I took a hammer to it and hit on the medium side. The truck only has 130k. I did report this to toyota just in case they would attempt to do something about it which they will not.

9-17-2008 I just got the truck back from my local mechanic. I Paid $50 to have it patched. Its not the greatest piece of work but its a lot better. There is some metal behind it to brace it. My mechanic thinks that when I had the truck down in WV march 08 to have the exhaust put on that they accidentally torched the truck and didn't tell me about it. Its located in between the  the right rear tire and first frame support mount. My exhaust is about 7 ins away from this. So maybe they did do this. Or it simply could have been a built up of dirt and debris over the years and from not cleaning the frame out  good enough.

The rust is getting worse. I now have a small hole in the bed that goes straight through. I could replace the floor of the truck bed for $786 30% retail from a toyota dealer in Spokane WA. But then I would have to pay shipping, have it painted, and installed. I've thought about taking the bed completely off the truck and giving it to my mechanic and have him cut the bad sections out of the floor and have him patch it. I had my bodyman patch it once before but, as you can see its crap. Its not even a full year yet since I wrecked my truck and had it repainted. I did tell my bodyman about it and he said to bring the truck back in a year. Well, of course I have a strong feeling that he is going to charge me about $250-$300 to have it fixed. I'm not giving him another penny after he worked on my truck before. So for now, I'm just going to leave it as it is.

I can see the light. My truck must be holy.

2/13/2009 New Rust pictures Yeah!!

Drivers side stepbar looking a littl rusty. I'm going to repaint the stepbar with POR 15 once the weather clears up. This time I'll apply 2-3 coats instead of 1.

Look at all that crap that gets tucked up underndeath that frame support bracket. No wonder why it rusted out.

Rear differential looking a little rusty

2/13/2009 Well I thought my frame was really rusty until I took some pictures of my neighbors 96 Chevy 1500 Silverado Ext Cab 4x4 Z-71 5.0 V8 with ONLY 66,000 miles

66,000 original miles. My neighbor bought this truck in 2002 with only 56,000 miles. He has never washed it and never really took good care of it either. Its sad to see this truck sitting there in the driveway rotting away. He only used the truck to either haul mulch, building supplies, and/or put his boat in the water. I'm not trying to dis Chevy in any way. Personally I like chevy especially the way they sound with dual exhaust.

The cab corners are shot. I could put my foot through them. I know that you can get replacement cab corners.

Thanks man, it's a slow progress. Especially this summer i've been busy with other stuff. I think my next mod is gonna be an exhaust system. Two 60 series flowmasters. It should give it a nice aggressive growl.
